New Air Compressor advice |
|
Morning all.
I've just taken the old compressor off my D3, and its completely fubar.
Whats the general consensus of best make for a replacement and are there any good deals around?
I also will need a new bracket, as the old one only has 1 of the 3 holes intact.
Also, I couldn't remove one of the black air hoses and cut it off at the compressor - is that going to be a problem??
Thanks for all the advice I'm about to get
Cheers,
Jim

What did you take off? Hitachi or AMK?

This is the AMK type replacement. It is a like for like copy of the AMK and comes with Bearmach's 3 year extended warranty. The kit also includes bracket, pipes and relay (and a new cover) so should have covered.

If you took off a Hitachi you MUST get a software update to change to AMK. I believe you can do this yourself if you have an IID tool (I didn't have mine when I first changed over) or you'll have to go to the stealers to get it done (about £80 I think).

Thanks for the info webego. That unit looks good - and pricey
I have a neighbor (found on here) who has the IID but only coded for his car. Would he be able to do the update do you think?
Annoyingly, I bought a service kit as i thought it would be relatively simple - BAH!
I have found a guy (4x4 AirSeals) who can supply me with repair parts and a second hand bracket but I'm thinking good money after bad at this point.
Thoughts?
Cheers so far, Jim

Interestingly, I just spoke to Bearmach and they confirmed that their unit is manufactured in China.
So I found what looks to be the exact same unit on on the Bay, for £100 cheaper (and alleged 2 years warranty). That's made it even trickier.
Decision decisions...
Can I drive the vehicle with no pump fitted?

Not sure on the IID. I know you can do some diagnostic things on other vehicles but don't know about changing settings.
I think the service kits rarely fix a compressor when you already have problems. They are intended more for a regular service to prolong the life of your compressor.
Entirely up to you whether you repair or replace. The AMK compressors have been a bit of a lottery with some (including my previous one) lasting only a couple of years. In my case I now believe this was because of a leak elsewhere, probably the reservoir tank (which I have now replaced) was causing the compressor to work overtime and shortened it's life. My hope is that this latest one will fair better now I have replace other parts in the system. The 3 year warranty gives me some peace of mind but I would hope this one will last longer than that. Especially if I give it an annual or bi-annual service of the desiccant.
Re the similar one on the bay, I would personally feel more confidant that Bearmach will be around within the next 3 years to honour their warranty than some random on eBay.
Oh, and I've never tried to drive without a compressor fitted. In theory I guess the current air is trapped within the system but it won't be able to top up. Wouldn't risk it myself.

Thanks for the thoughts. I agree about the Bearnach warranty thing.
It’s been a total disaster so far. As I had the service kit I decided to go ahead and give it a go.
So far:
Compressor bracket is useless and needs replacing.
All compressor and cover fixing screws need replacing.
Dropped a new captive nut into the chassis rail (fished it out with a magnet after 30 minutes)
Sheared off 2 of the 4 head bolts of the compressor. (30 minutes with a welder to extract them)
Sheared off 3 of the 4 motor housing screws. Not yet tried to fix this yet.
Smashed the brass collet trying to extract the pipe stub I had to cut off. Got a replacement on order to try and fit.
2 of the dryer housing screws are rusted past usefulness and need replacing.
And that’s just taking it apart!
I need a beer.

OK I've taken your advice webego and ordered the Bearmach AMK kit.
FYI, I found it online for £349.99 from TerrainTech.

Nice find! Saved £35 on AF price.
Don't forget you need to patch the ECU for the AMK!

I'm hoping that my neighbor who has a IID can do it although he only has a single VIN license.
I may pay him £60 to add my VIN rather than pay the main dealers to do it

I know you probably don't want to think about spending another £400 after forking out for the compressor, but if you are going to keep the disco for any amount of time you should seriously think about buying your own IID BT tool. It's a matter of when, not if, you get your next fault. I didn't get mine till this year (4 years after buying the car) so effectively paid the £80 to the stealers extra. You can sometimes pick them up second hand on here and just need to pay the £25 for change of ownership. Or new from this thread https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/sale-gap-ii...72779.html

You're right Webego - I don't want to think about another £400 just yet
So I just finished the new install, but I haven't yet got the firmware upgraded. At what point is it OK to connect the battery?
Can I connect it now and test it before the update?
Cheers,
Jim

Well the new compressor is fitted and working - thanks for everyone's help.
2 problems with the AMK replacement unit from Bearmach.
The hole in the bottom of the mounting plate for the M6 bolt that holds the bottom cover was not tapped all the way through. When tightening the bolt, it stripped the threads. Bummer.
The control cable loom was clipped to the top of the compressor in such a way that it did not reach the vehicle loom. It was necessary to cut the cable tie to make it reach, which was tricky with it installed.
Otherwise, all good, and no more annoying warnings.

Glad to hear you got it sorted.
Mine was the same BTW. The bottom bolt was a little tight to install as it was tapping along the way but didn't thread. I also had to cut the tie to allow the cable to reach the plug.
Did you get the AMK patch done to switch the compressor strategy?
