Hi
I'm new (1st post) to the disco forum.
Bit about me i suppose.
Live in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, Work for Sainsburys as a Driver Trainer, owned a 4x4 for the last 14 years (3 x Frontera's) Enjoy motorcycling (BMW R1150GS Adventure).
I'm thinking of getting a TD4 HSE from my local Dealer in Welwyn Garden City at around the £42,00 mark.
Before i commit i need to be sure on the MPG.
What is a true MPG for the Disco 4?
Land Rover tell me 25 around town and about 30 on a run, is this about right?
I want a TD4 and my misses wants me to get a BMW X5 for around the same money.
We don't go off road very often, well apart from going up the odd kerb (her driving not me)
What points do i need to look for when buying a s/h one from a dealer.
Thanks in advance for all your help

Hi MA and welcome to the forum.
Our Discovery 4 averages about 25 mpg. The D4 is a great all round vehicle and if it snow's like it did last year then I know which I would rather be in.

Hi Mark,
Welcome to the forum.
I've had the D4 near 18 months now and have driven it in a large variety of situations for motorway to heavy snow to cross the Dunes in Tunisia and the D4 is great wherever, an in the snow if was able to keep going where many other 4x4 had failed
As for MPG 25 around town and about 30-32 on a run, is this about right, provided you don't use cr4p supermarket fuel.
Go for the D4, you won't regret it

Marks,
Welcome!
However, with respect, it's a somewhat naive question. What other test results are you going to compare the LR with?
Best Wishes,
Peter
PS: I'm also bemused that the first thing many people focus on is fuel consumption. There is much more to the Disco than that. The Bearded Dragon

Welcome
and commiserations for driving Frontera's
MPG - i get an average of 28.6 over 15,000 miles - mostly mway though. The winch and mantec plate restrict airflow a little through the intercooler which reduces the mpg a bit.
assume you'll get 25mpg and then you can stop worrying about it and just enjoy the ride
I understand your concern with fuel consumption - i do 40,000 business miles a year and fuel is a major running cost. if you get a mileage allowance from your employer it can cost a lot of money doing "business miles" if the allowance doesnt cover the cost of the fuel ! Duncan

it will be the same sort of MPG for any large 4x4.
comparing servicing and parts between LR and Merc for instance, i find the LR part very reasonably priced - certainly cheaper than the spare parts for my Mercedes - labour rates are about the same Duncan

Hi,
MPG wise I get around 26-27 driving throughout the week to work. Did 250 miles in it yesterday with an average of 34.1, can't complain with that
It really depends how you drive it, a leaden right foot and too much SPORT and you'll be in the low 20's very quickly!
In winter due to the pre heater and constant de misting etc drops to about a consistent 24-25....
Seriously not too bad for such a heavy beast, the mini we also have only indicates 33.4 MPG

MA welcome to the site
Think the MPG has been covered and I would agree with all the figures quoted. Car is a dream to drive and as has been said will go where most 4x4's will not (did the PNC this year and saw that for myself). Tows the tin tent with easy and in comfort, recently looked at a new merc 4x4 and the X5, to be honest I thought there was no comparison, still got the D4 and now looking at possibly changing it for another one late this year or early next. Buy it you will not regret it MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange
