New Driver - Expected fuel economy? |
|
Hi guys (and gals!)
Just picked up my new (and first) T6 auto. Just filled her up first time over £80 - owch!
So what fuel economy should I be expecting for knocking around town and on long mway journeys?
Are there any tried and tested techniques for getting the best possible mpg?
Can I expect the mpg to increase as she runs in? if so at what mileage?
First impressions though on my new motor - wow!

Hi chrislifetour - welcome to DISCO3.
I'd imagine that you're fuel economy will improve as it runs in.
Sounds like we do the same sorts of driving as you - dashing about town and motorway jaunts. Averaging about 26 MPG but it's never a problem - the fuel tank's big enough
That said, try not to fill the tank to the brim - ironically the added weight of all the diesel causes the car to need more diesel... 2007 Porsche Boxster (987) 2.7

I've done just over 5k in mine and a mix of motorway 80mph and town driving has returned approx 23mpg...... not as much as I'd expected, but then again, I knew it would be thirsty, it's 2.7 tonnes afterall.
Some have managed 30mph on longer trips & I have too on a long trip, but when it gets mixed in, it's lower than you might think.
26mpg would seem to be a reasonable figure. (HSE Auto) Bodsys Brake Bible

They do seem to vary a lot, my current manual with 27k miles on the clock is returning 28mpg with mixed driving and over 30mpg on longer runs, the old manual only did around 25 and the auto 23-24. 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

Depending on your driving style and typical journey's, I can remap your Disco3 to give you an extra 8-12% fuel economy - it does improve over time though and the %age improvement a tune can give you will be on top of any 'running in' increases

Initially I was getting 27-27mpg with a mix of town driving and enthusiastic use of rural A, B and unclassified roads. Since fitting AT tyres it's down to 24.5 - 25.5 I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

What I can say is that the MPG in a Disco3 highly depends on the way you drive... (nothing new I am afraid )
Generally speaking I get from 22 to 32.6 MPG calculated after refuelling (24 to 35.3 according to onboard computer), depending on the way I drive and if I drove mostly in town or on mortoways.
If I drive *very* calmly, and mostly on motorways I can get an actual 32.6 MPG (35.3 according to onboard computer). That way once I have done 630M on one full tank... (some kind of world record I reckon, above all with an Auto )
cheers

24-25mpg. up to 28 on a long run.
Consider a Turbochip or JE Tune or a Torq Tune , impoves mpg and also driveability.
All these companies and/or there agents are on here and Im sure will be happy
to tell you about their products and why their product is best.

I'm getting really depressed now as I get 30mpg indicated on most days which is A's Bs' and motorway into the town centre. I must not be pushing my foot hard enough on the gas pedal Obviously I need to learn new driving skills.
Funny thing is, I put the expedition roof rack on at the weekend (OK actually 4 of us lifted the rack on ) and I expected the economy to suffer - the next drive on the same work route was 34mpg! Shome Mishtake Shurely!
Anyway it has settled back to 30ish which was a surprise.

I measure mine acurately with a sad spreadsheet time, mileage, litres, cost etc and that measures on average of 22.44MPG since new. The trip clock shows 25.4mpg so there's surely some variance. Yes I know the fill-ups will be marginally different due to how far up the neck o fthe tank you fill up, but as an average it should work out close to the on-board computer. But by all accounts the on-board computer isn't really that accurate at all.
Alex, are you able to do a couple of fills & keeo the receipts with teh mileages on accurately & then see what it shows. You must do fill up to fill up though for it to work. Bodsys Brake Bible
