[quote="Littletamcroft"]Thinking about it in spring/summer 17 and the D4 ideal for the job, a lazy drive in comfort. I have a head start on most in here as only 99 miles from start and finish at Inverness. I know some of the route and it is fab.
If you like these sort of runs in Scotland then have a read of "Raw Spirit" by the late Iain Banks - particularly if you like whisky too!![/quote
Thanks fellas ]

Hi mate. I've done this a few times now over the past few years and i loved the route as the scenary is stunning regardless of weather.
April & May is a very good time of year to do it beleieve it or not as avoids the midge lol.

Sorry, in my opinion, if you don't get the weather, it's a waste of time. The whole point of the trip should be the scenery, if you can't see it because of the rain or mist ..........

Yes I agree fella. I am doing it for the scenery too. Also as Airborne M says avoiding the midges would be a distinct advantage so it will be late April or May..Thanks

Hi
Had a few days to spare so I thought I would do a recce of the Northern 500 and give the conversion a ‘shake down’.
What an excellent experience!
I’ve added some photo’s, to add to others already posted, which might inspire others to give it some serious consideration.
Apart from a couple of very minor tweaks, I was very pleased with my ‘accommodation’ and the ability to stop wherever I wanted with everything to hand – my total cash outlay for the trip was less then £14.00 ( fuel excluded ! )………
On the subject of fuel, my average MPG for the trip, based on brimming the tank each time, was 25.92, considering the roof rack and RAI, I think was quite acceptable.
Being a manual, there was certainly quite a bit of gear stick stirring on some of the more challenging roads, which just adds to the driving experience.
The landscape, the peace and quiet, the wildlife and the solitude were amazing.
Doing the trip solo was a great, but I would recommend signing up to the group for next years trip and sharing the experience!
Thanks to ‘Highlands’ for his offer of a meal - maybe next time!
Simon

Some great pictures there Simon.
Love the unusual view of the castle, most people get either nothing or the white stones of the car park in the foreground. A longer lens and a bit further away to increase the size of the castle vs the trees....well, it's a lovely picture anyway.
Would be great to meet you at some point, and to look over the conversion; possibly for c.3 years time when the last of the boys has left for Uni/work.Black 05 TDV6 HSE Auto
