oil in intercooler

D4 TDV6 MY 2011

I get a lot of oil in the lower intercooler tube. And I mean a lot.

Have talked to the workshop about finding out from where it comes. They do not know how to do.

Is there a way to check if the oil comes from one of the turbos without having to lift the body.
Or if it comes from somewhere else.

Oil catcher, CSOV and secondary turbo changed.

If you are not having to top up oil, then it's normal. Seems like it's the normal thing with LR diesels, from the Freelander 1, Freelander 2 and now my RRS 2009.

Check your crankcase breather first. If too much oil is escaping past the crankcase breather, it's either not doing its job in trapping any oil mist, or your piston rings and/or cylinder bores are excessively worn.

How much mileage has the engine covered?

This is a D4 with a TDV& 3.0 ltr engine.

I have tried to find out about the crankcase breather, but there is no obvious breather there.
Have change the CSOV and the oil trap.

I had the engine rebuilt by Oval motors and it started from when the engine was installed.

Which turbo pipe has the oil to the intercooler? left or right?

The Left turbo has the breather system plumbed into it.

When you had the engine rebuilt did you change the turbos? Its false economy not to as any oil contamination when the engine packed up will damage the Turbo.

Both turbos was checked and refurbished.
The second turbo has been replaced when the oilconsumption was determined.

Have you got the shorter secondary turbo drain pipe fitted? The original can cause oil to back up as it doesn’t drain properly & ends up pushing past the turbo seals.

Did mine the other day.

Reply from other thread.

Have you checked the PCV system and the crank case pressure? Both are interlinked and could cause oil in the intercooler, either from the crank case gasses or turbo seals leaking. You could try fitting an oil catch can between the PCV and the intake hose to see how much oil is coming from the crankcase gasses.

Just to note, a small amount of oil in the intercooler is normal due to the PCV being plumbed into the intake but fitting a Mann Provent 200 into the pipe work and having it drain into a bottle would stop this. (Assuming PCV is the only cause)

Reply to you response in that thread.

The PCV system consists of the oil separator in the middle of the V at the back, the crank case gases go through this and the oil is meant to drop out of suspension into the reservoir underneath then back into the block, the gasses are supposed to then be “clean” and go through a pipe at the rear of the engine to the intake of the primary turbo.

Is the oil that you are “consuming” the same volume as what is in the intercooler?

A Mann Provent 200 is a filter (replaceable filter) that can be plumbed into the pipe work between the oil separator and the intake of the primary turbo. It has a drain that can be piped to an old coke bottle if you want to measure how much oil it is removing or make a connection into the oil extraction pipe but this may be difficult as the Provent 200 relies on gravity to drain. You may struggle to get it high enough.

To measure crank case pressure you will need to buy a new oil cap. Drill a hole in the old oil cap and fit a tyre valve with the valve core removed. This gives you a point at which you can connect a gauge to take a reading. Check against someone else you know to compare as I cannot remember what a good reading is.

Thank you for your answer.

I would say that most of the oil is collected in the intercooler and comes out when the lower intercooler tube is loosened.

There is no smoke from the exhaust.

When taking away the oil filler cap there is smoke coming out. I am not sure what is normal. Have a video I can send you.

I had recently repaired a defective turbo on another car. Here the oil return line was clogged and no more oil could drain. The oil pressure in the system has then ensured that the turbo loses a lot of oil into the intake area / intercooler.
There I had to think of you. Did you or your shop check this line or in your case both lines because of the two turbos?
Possibly the line of both turbos can be done without taking off the body.

Regarding the pressure in the crankcase, I can tell you that I can open the oil filler cap on mine and then steam/smoke comes from there as well. But this is very normal with most engines. There is also a certain draft there.
A rule of thumb is if you put the cap loosely on the filler neck, this must remain. For me, it turns back on a bit due to gravity and low back pressure....

Hi again Daniel,

answered partly your private messege about the oil return.

But here I do not understand this what you mean:

A rule of thumb is if you put the cap loosely on the filler neck, this must remain. For me, it turns back on a bit due to gravity and low back pressure....

I appreciate very much your knowledge!
