Rear Screen Entertainement System Retrofit Guide |
|
Sorry it has taken so long but at promised I have finally uploaded my PDF guide to retrofitting the OEM Factory Supplied Rear Screeen Entertainment System.
http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/albums/use...0Guide.pdf
I have also added a few more pictures to my gallery and a selection of PDF documents relating to the removal of the relevant trim panels for this project.
For anyone reading this for the first time After a few months of research and a lot of time and effort I have sucessfully retrofitted the full OEM RSE system to our 2008MY D3 HSE 8) The PDF is a guide to how I went about it, just in case anyone else wants to have a go for themselves, that is in addition to the two members that I already know are in the middle of it
Original post here: http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic47680.html
I am sure I will be asked questions as I doubt my guide covers everything but in summary:
Is it hard to do? That depends on individual ability but not really.
Did it take long? Urm Yes if you include the time to remove the cables from a donor vehicle
Is it worth it? YES without a doubt
Is it better than an aftermarket system? Do I need to answer that one
How much does it cost? Well that depends on how and where you source the parts but my total outlay was just under £350
The car was in for some warranty work yesterday and even the dealer was impressed
I welcome any feedback and look forward to reading many other success stories over time

Hello Andy,
Brillaint work, and thanks for your tips and pointers over the telephone.
I can confirm that my system is now up and running 100%.
The only point I would make is that you have be careful if your donor loom is taken from a FFRR (L322)- as mine was.
The connections on the two cables which run from the RSE module to the left and right screens are mitsumi 20 pin connections at each end (not mitsumi 20 at one end, and Alpine 13 pin at the other)
In the L322 setup there is a short 'bridging' loom which connects under the seat, and joins the monitor cable midway up the seat back, also this lead has the opposite female plug, and as such will not connect to the one in the RRS/D3 headrests
To further frustrate my efforts, the L322 headrests are not a direct swop with the D3 or RRS because they are motorised, and as such have a larger diameter 'leg' - which does not fit into the RRS/D3 fittings.
To get around this problem I had to cut the female Alpine connector off the L322 headrests and solder it to my RRS leads. Be very careful - these wires are very small, some of them are coax, so there is an inner and outer as well!
It has taken me a while, but with great support/advice from Ajay(Andy) & Wiggs(Adrian) I have also achieved the impossible - and I have to say it is brilliant
The only downside for me was the fact that I had to aquire 2 sets of headrests, which meant that my total expenditure was approx £400.00. But on the up side - at least I have some spare screens
My XS com. goes back to the dealer on Thursday for service, since they delivered it to me it has changed!
It now has: Premium leather int. OEM Nav, TMC, Pti, 4x4info, Offroad Nav, D4 Hybid TV, RSE, cooler box etc.
I wonder if they will notice?
All achieved with the help and knowledge of people on the Disco3 forum.
Thanks
Andrew

Hello Adrian,
Still waiting for the 'proper' loom - but I have managed to rig up a partial temp fix - not brilliant but at least it proves it works!
Just thinking about changing the amp for the logic 7.
How are you getting on with your RSE?
Speak to you soon,
Andrew

Russell, baring in mind I couldn't find anyone else who had tackled this on a D3 before I did, and we all know how long they have been around, I think you may be waiting a while before someone attemps the same on a D4
In principle though I would expect the items required to be the same and with the same wiring plus I think the headrest grab handles are no longer fitted on a D4 which will make life easier BUT the nav system is different so coding it for RSE may be done in a differenet way plus you need a "WIGGS type bloke" with a faultmate licenced for a D4 before attempting to change the CCF.
BBS SPY may pass comment on this when he is next passing
Without crawling over a D4 with RSE and then studying a wiring diagram for now I am just speculating

Thanks Andy, have been looking through the internet and various breakers to try to find a D3/RRS or D4 with RSE to try to get hold of the bits, will keep lloking and if I can find bits might well have a go. MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

Andy great write-up and great mod
Could I just clarify, have you retrofitted the (hybrid) TV tuner as well? If I am reading this correctly, you only added the LR DVD? If not, did you get the antenna amps required as well?
I guess retrofitting the TV tuner only can also be done, seeing as it is one of those "can't be done after purchase" accessories too

Biz,
My car already had the Hybrid TV tuner fitted before I started the RSE retrofit but I suggest sending a PM to Andrew (ajsms999), he replied earlier in this thread. As he is retrofitting both and I am sure he will help answer any questions on the TV retrofit

Does anyone want to find an extra set of wirings from a breaker when you are getting yours and sell them to me for a profit? I am in USA and finding one is harder it seems. I am willing to pay top dollar, euro, sterling pound or what ever...
Does anyone wants to let me borrow the faultmate licensed for multi car TJ
