No one takes anything non-Tesla on the Teslarati site seriously. It is a fanboy/shill site.

Currently charging mid journey is easier with a Tesla, but that advantage is diminishing as the competition matures. The styling of Tesla’s is marmite, I think they have bland cheap interiors and jelly mould exterior styling, whereas others like this (presumably the same sort of people that like the styling of the D5 Rolling with laughter ).

For all the positives offered by Tesla’s, and there are a few, I will never buy one because it would mean putting money in the pocket of that odious idiot Musk.


Surely this is where all the other manufacturers need to club together, get a standard plug and their own charging system to out Tesla Tesla. The interior of the Model 3 looked crap in comparison to the iPace but if life is as difficult as the first video made out you can see why people buy Tesla’s. My wife’s cousin has a Model S and he runs up and down the motorway and even around the Scottish Highlands and never seems to have range worry or concerns where he will be charging next.

And there is a standard charging ‘plug’, which is CCS. Even Tesla is fitting this to European models, so they can charge at non-Tesla sites. Unfortunately Tesla don’t allow non-Tesla’s to charge at their sites. Tesla are the ‘lightning cable’ solution in a world of USB-C. Wink

I am just finalising my I-Pace purchase - just trying to work out options and finance structure.

Would recommend running the Get I-Pace app which logs all your journeys to give a predicted range (177 miles for me) (motorway miles has minimal regenerative breaking and lowers the range apparently), cost and charge ups. I do 18k miles/year. The thing that has really really surprised me that over the last 6K of miles I’ve tracked on the app, I would never have needed to charge away from home. Really interesting.

For me, I will still need a big 4x4 for long France trips and this D3 seems reluctant to give up just yet. Bonkers maths, but 18K/year on an I-Pace I put through my business + a new PCP’d D5 or New Defender for Mrs C (6-8K miles/year) works out cheaper than me having a New Defender or D5 on PCP (and no I-Pace) and putting 18K/years on that.

I would have like to have tried this, but can't find the "Get I-Pace" app for Android only Apple, which is really bad marketing as Android & Apple have an equal number of users in the UK, which is the only market in which the app is available!

My gut feeling, and some articles I’ve read is to hold off for a few years until the new technology settles itself down a bit into the market. Harry’s charging issues highlighted this for me perfectly. Infrastructure is not there yet and the tech is too expensive. Give it 5 years and we’ll all be in hydrogen fuel cells Whistle

I agree entirely. The problem is, as I see it, that the EV & it's infrastructure may be ready by 2025, but the H2 fuel cell vehicle will be lagging many years behind.

That being so I would still probably want to go for a PHEV but am concerned that their production may wane in the next few years.

Nigel-Buying a PHEV on a PCP would resolve that fear, as in addition to being able to hand it back at the end of the agreement all PCP agreements have a Voluntary Termination clause. Two important safety nets, which is one reason why I’d only use finance to purchase any vehicle with a value in 5 figures.

Real shame the PHEV RRS and FFRR don't have a few more miles on their electric only range... would buy one in an instant if so!

I’ve now started to seriously consider a fully electric vehicle for my next car, to the extent that I actually went round having a look last Thursday.
Rural infrastructure isn’t there yet, but we’re slowly seeing improvements. There’s no doubt that it’s the longer journeys when range (or more accurately, recharging) is the biggest issue.
I’m predominantly interested in the forthcoming VW ID 4, or as I found out it’s going to be called, the Crozz.
No specs or prices until 4th Quarter this year but I’ve asked to Be kept updated on any launch info.
Had a look in the meantime at the Mercedes EQC and the Jag I-Pace, both of which are very nice cars in their own rights.
The Scottish Government is offering interest free loans up to £35k for a fully electric vehicle, which might be tempting but I’ll need to do more digging first.
Obviously home charging is a must, but local car parks are installing EV chargeRos, and our local supermarket has just installed 2 charging points.
Urban infrastructure means it’s a no-brainer if you live in a city, but I live out in Banjo Country and rural infrastructure (while slowly improving) means it will require a lot more planning and thought before I commit.

IMO that’s acceptable for a PHEV, the main purpose of that car is emission free driving in the city.

My gripe with PHEVs is they are all petrol.
