So, overnight my car was opened and the glovebox and armrest rifled through .... the only things they ended up stealing were an old iPod nano, some iPhone charging leads, a bag of change for car parks, and some old CDs (but leaving another collection, and they clearly don't like my taste in sunglasses!)...
I think they have got in via the relay key method... we usually keep our keys in a pouch to prevent this sort of thing, but last night we accidentally kept one key out, just in a drawer. Given there is no other damage to the vehicle, or they didn't;t actually steal it, I can only think its a bunch of b'stards driving around and being opportunistic.
My question is this... since they have broken in, does this mean they now have unfettered access, or does keeping my key in the pouch mean it would be safe next time around?

I would check that all the doors are actually locking particularly the near side rear. I doubt they would pay upwards of £5-£6k for a device to just rifle the glove box. It can when others can't,

I disabled the keyless entry in mine.
Not a major issue to have to press the plip a couple of times and one less security issue to worry about

Andy.. in relation to your question it will only do it at the time … the device is just rebroadcasting a live signal from the car to the key.. which is why one of them stand near the car and pull/touch the door handles to get the car to wake up.. it rebroadcasts that signal to your keys.. once the key receives the signal it sends a response… which tells the car to open/start…
If they got that far all they needed to do was push the start stop button to drive off… so I would also suggest that the car was unlocked… they can do this by blocking the signal from the key …. Thus when you leave the car and push the lock button it is imperative that you watch the indicators flash and the door mirrors fold back …
There are devices which they can deploy which blocks key signals ….

RF blockers can be had for less than £100. Its a little frightening
The signal relay boxes are a little more, but still worryingly cheap. We've disabled keyless entry on the XF and the DS, just incase. It's not an issue this far up, but I doubt it'll be long before it is...My D3 Build Thread

I agree with M3DPO and others that suggest either a faulty door lock or you thought you'd locked it and hadn't. The amount of people tha forget tolock their cars is amazing. It's now a full time job for some 'service users' to wander round and try door handles all night and collect loose change, sunglasses and any other bits they can flog for a few quid.
That would also explain the alarm not going off.
If they'd got into the car using relay theft then they would've nicked the car too. If they'd been disturbed mid theft (ie.just got the car unlocked) they wouldn't have stuck around to steal trinkets from within the vehicle.
it does suggest i may have been a total numpty, and left the thing unlocked (it wouldn't be the first time) - the local scum have just been trying car doors at the same time i;ve left my key outside the pouch.
anyway, as someone said, at least it wasn't nicked, or damaged.
