Road Angels and the like

Hi all, I'm after some opinions and advice on speed camera "detectors"...

I've been using a Road Angel Plus for about a year now - I had through a good deal with my car insurance - and thought it a very useful piece of kit. But after 2 drops on the floor, its now broken and gone in the bin.

I'm after a replacement but dont want another Road Angel Plus as I thought it was a bit brittle and not rugged enough for my day-to-day use. But I do want one with its own rechargeable battery as I've a thing about wires cluttering up the dash.

Anyone have any ideas?

The Road Angel professional looks less flimsy, has its own battery but at £230+ seems a lot of wedge for what it is.

Does anyone have any experience or recommendations for alternatives that have internal rechargeable batteries?

Cheers,
Christoff. Thumbs Up

Ken , I dont know what your problem is with me. But i do find your replies to mine both offensive and quite rude.
I do realise we can not all be as inteligent and modest as your self but can certainly be more polite and respectfull of others opinions. I am on here to learn and dont appreciate your snide remarks.

If Ken was 'having a go' you'd feel his breath (or the blunt end of a Browning) on the back of your neck before you saw anything on your screen Wink
don't be so anally retentive and you'll get on fine Thumbs Up

I don't know if it's any help to you, but I have two systems running in my Disco. One is the 'standard' Tom Tom, but the other is something called Microfuzion - have a look at their website. Its about the size of a large matchbox - cost approx £90 and it talks to you and warns of not only fixed camera sites, but also mobile ones. Upgrades are free for life and included in the cost of the kit. The LED display also gives speed indication and a few other things you can set it to display.
I have mounted it on the front of the cubby box and the power feed is taken from the socket at the rear of that - so there's no trailing wires. Nothing sophisticated about mounting it - I have simply used that extra sticky (white) Blu Tack. It works fine in that position although sometimes takes a few minutes to find the satellites. I've had it for about two years now and am pleased with its accuracy and performance. Hope this helps.
I was taught to be cautious.

For anyone without the OEM satnav this would seem the most sensible option to me too. The Road Angel is just a GPS in a box with no screen, I am not sure how it can be a master of the trade more than a stanard sat nav like the Garmin.

Alternately, I find using "Your Eyes"(TM) to be quite a good safety feature. I have been using this system for the last 10+ Years with 100% results...
Disco3 is now gone but not forgotten. Waiting for Disco6 with full aluminium construction weight reduction and hybrid engine...

Problem i found with using my eyes was when in France the Cameras were mounted on the gantries above you behind sighns. I did 7000miles around europe last year and to be honest the most difficult cameras to spot seemed to be in France and Spain. Garmin only picked up about 40% of the ones i saw. Saying that Did manage the whole trip without a fine somehow because i know i was caught in Italy by two plods in a disused factory entrance and a mobile gun. Perhaps they couldnt be bothered with the UK Plate (who knows).Ps Now a lot lighter and thanks for the comments.

Garmin is superb but i do have a big gripe which i informed them about last week. There is a new Pay motor way in Spain which has been open for 18 moths AP7 Runs from Murcia down to Vera. Just downloaded Garmins new 2008 map and guess what (Not there). The map manufactures have got it on but Garmin inform me as they only issue updates every 12 months I now have to wait until 2009 for my update which wont help me in September when i am down there.Have to get paper one out for that part of the journey Big Cry

The French took my picture a couple of months ago by a mobile unit near Nancy. As JF Lux said, not much will come of it, and so far nothing has. It depends on the co-operation agreement between the agencies in each country. Even so, I reckon that a system that gives warning of fixed cameras, especially in the UK, which has become an Orwellian state, is well worth the modest expense.
