Ok. MY10 D4. Keyless start, not keyless locking.
Quite a few cold morning, I have unlocked the car, opened door, and leaned in to start car, and message says 'Cannot detect Smart key.
Pull key out of right hand pocket, put on seat, car starts.
Yesterday, unlocked car, and spent 10 mins going round and around tying 3 Christmas trees to the roof.
Got in car, started car, then realised keys were not in my jeans pocket. Searched for 5 mins. Opened every door. checked all floors. Found them in a rarely used pocket, in the coat I was wearing, in the boot, behind seats of row 3.
So how come the sensor doesn't pick it up, literally within 2 feet of the steering wheel, with the door open, but can pick it up, buried in the back? MY07 Freelander2 SE Santorini Black - Gone

Hi Dean,
Yours actually prompted mine.
So there must be an additional sensor in the boot!
As long as my key is in the car it works, but literally just outside doesn't. MY07 Freelander2 SE Santorini Black - Gone

Looking at a 2016 Owners Handbook there are 8 sensors in the vehicle for the key fob including a number in or near the boot. The primary (engine start) sensor is on the left hand side of the steering column and shown by three vertical lines in the plastic.

Presumably the proliferation of sensors in the boot is to try to prevent one locking the keys in there!

Could be.
However, I would like to know who worked out, that you are more likely to leave your keys in the boot, than in the front of the car.... MY07 Freelander2 SE Santorini Black - Gone

There’s one sensor under the carpet in the boot towards the front. There’s another in the centre console near the CD player. The 8 may include the door sensors but don’t know for sure. 012MY RRS 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography (Current)
