When the sound goes off its off constantly until I either turn air con on and within a few minutes it will come back on or I switch car off and leave for a while, then it will only come back on until it has warmed up then its off again. As I said earlier it will stay working so long as I keep it cool with air con on.
I guess the capacitor is in the head unit.

fade2grey. If LR had used cheap and crappy capcitors, as so many do, would you not imagine this to be a common problem in all D3's.
johnnychainsaw, It is true that large electrolytic capacitors of the type used in power supplies and audio amplification circuirtry can dry out, leak and even blow. and in latter stages their functionality can indeed seem dependant upon ambient temperature. They even have life expectancy ratings for them.
I am entirely familiar with this and have fixed more things than i could possibly remember, simply by replacing them.
The last case was in 2 identical wide screen monitors. having bought them new as a pair and used them as such, I am still however utterly stunned that both items exhibited exactly the same failings at exactly the same time.
Although no one else has ever reported the same problem, it is possible that one of the power supply capacitors in your head unit might possibly be at fault, noting that Audio amplification is actually done by the Amp under the seat which you have changed
But whadda i know

I'm not suggesting that the problem this gentleman is experiencing is universal or wide spread or as a result of lr using substandard parts, merely suggesting that the symptoms seem to fit with the characteristics of a blown or faulty capacitor in the power supply, amp or logic of the head unit. I've seen plenty of complicated things brought to a halt by similar stuff.
If you happen to have the unit physically open, a quick visual scan of the caps should point out the suspect - its normally the one with the raised/domed end cap. It could be a host of other things, dodgy joints & connectors etc though. 56 HSE

if it is the capacitor thats the problem could this be fixed?
The breakers yard that sent me the amp and kindly took it back said they have a head unit in all be it a single cd player (not 6cd). Will this just plug in and play or will I have to have it re programmed in?

The IHU that is strapped on the back of the Head unit does actually contain a 2200 UF 16V capacitor in it's power supply circuitry. This is on the output of a torroidal type choke and is of a size that could dry out and possibly cause temperature related failure symptoms.
It is however not something that can easily be visually checked and as is not something that is easy to get to or has any history of failure or reason to suspect.
If it was failing, you would loose everything including display and not just sound.
But wadda i know.

Argh, this is mental. Changed head unit over and I'm still having the same problem. Don't really know where to try next.

Hi BBS Spy,
Would you by any chance be able to explain why if it is the MOST system, when I keep the temperature low in car everything works fine but cuts out if I raise temperature. Could it be the cable distorts slightly when warm which might effect the circuit?
