So Gary are you saying just because the main battery is five years old and only done 17,800 miles the main battery could affect the start stop ? The main battery shows no signs of it not being in good condition, vehicle starting on the button, also I have kept the battery fully charged via the the CTEK charger.thanks malc

Five years is a good life for the original battery.

Mine went at 3 years & 2 months, and the RAC man who came to my rescue told me that this was "typical".

Like you a trickle charge with a CETEK regularly & frequently.

I lost the start stop facility over the past couple of years even after charging the battery fully. Even though it started the car fine and the voltage seemed ok (a little low perhaps) I tested the capacity and it was down to 70% of the original rated capacity at 4 1/2 years old so I changed it a couple of weeks ago and full stop start is now back!
Hope that helps

Hi Malc
In a nutshell, yes I am. I had a similar experience, although my car at 5 years had done about 27k. Changed the main battery and, hey presto, stop/start worked again. I had charged it with my CTEK msx7 every 2-3 weeks but eventually even that didn’t work. At one stage it felt like I had an electric car! I presume you have no warning lights on your dash (which would mean it is more likely the small stop/start battery or other fault)? I did have a fault early on with my MY2016 car that stopped the stop/start working which was rectified with a software update. That was within the first 2 years of ownership though. I suspect age is an important factor in battery life not just number of starts etc.
My voltage read from low to mid 12v when I put a tester on it. Without having specialist equipment, one test I saw recently was to put a voltage tester on the battery and see how much the voltage drops as you start the car. As a rough rule of thumb if it drops to under 10v , your battery is on the way out. Others, more knowledgeable may have a view on how effective this test is. But to reiterate, if this is a recent occurrence and the main battery has not been changed then consider a new battery.
As always, please update with any progress/solutions to keep up the learnings and shared experiences.
Cheers
 Gary

Thumbs Up Next move now will be to get the main battery checked and changed if needed although to be honest not quite sure if I am going to miss SS so maybe leave until after Christmas.

Can that be fixed via the OBD2 port ?

Nope...New actuator if both batteries have been replaced and still no joy then this is quite possibly your problem as they were known to fail upto mid 2015 apparently.

2014 D4.Mine was finally fixed today. No stop start for a while ( a good thing!) Over Christmas the car wouldn’t start but would if I put a jump lead from the main battery negative to the engine mount. Earth fault. After numerous checks the last resort was to unplug and check the black plastic negative plug to the starter. One pin in it didn’t look straight. Straightened , cleaned with electric spray and re connected. Started straight away and stop start is back.

If the SS battery is at fault you get the orange eco light (iirc its orange) with a strike through it constantly displayed. I’d make sure first the main battery is fully charged first, the if the SS is still not working then it’s to the dealer time.

+1 on this. Almost certain it will be your problem.. if it isn't a new battery will be a step forward in keeping the function going once you solve it.

Loads about s/s on here...

Stop / start eco fault

I have the orange eco light fault (since summer 2019) quoted ~£450 by a main dealer to replace the SS battery which they "hoped" Neutral would fix it. Needless to say - didn't fancy lining their pockets to restore a function that I'm not keen on.

I am interested what spec of battery people would recommend for a replacement ?

Will this need a reset or should I just replace and see if it restores the function ?

Exide EK151 about £40-£50. You can search online. It’s an unbranded version of the one LR put in. LR branded replacement is about £150. £450 to do the change over which would take them about 30 mins is outrageous.
Straight swap, and easy enough to do yourself with very few tools required. A BMS reset for this battery change is supposed to be required and recommended, but many on here have done the swap and not done this (including me, as I didn’t have the tool at the time) and had no problems, and the Eco warning light goes out immediately after replacement (assuming your new battery is charged up).
There’s some information on swapping it on this forum. The negative connections all come off as one, so don’t dismantle them, and the red plastic cover on the + levers up from the end nearest the windscreen. Save yourself £400.
Cheers
 Gary

I should add that, the battery is the most common cause of this issue, but there have been a few reports of a faulty gateway module causing it.
If your start stop battery is original it will almost certainly be this. I put a volt meter on mine and was getting about 11V which showed it was knackered. My CTEK charger also reported a fault when I tried to charge it.
