Hi Folks,
Just wondering - are there any issues with fitting a steel 17" wheel with 245/70R17 tyre in the spare wheel well on a D3? For instance - it is a lot heavier than the standard 18" alloy and tyre combo... and the diameter is also larger.
TIA.
Cheers,
Rob

Weight-wise I'm not sure, but the larger 265/70R17 tyre fits if you air it down a little, so I wouldn't imagine you'd have problems fitting it in.

Likewise, not sure about weight, but my 245's fit ok (oem rim) even with the "plough"attached.MY07 D3, TDV6S; Bull Bar, Cooper S/T's, Dual Battery, UHF, GPS; 03 D2, 94 D1, both departed & 1950 S1 80" going strong. 06 Astra CDX Coupe.

Thanks guys. I guess I'll have to listen for a "bang" and keep an eye on the rear view mirror for a spare disappearing in the distance!

Hi Rob,
If I can fit a 799mm diameter LTZ I'm sure you will have no problem fitting the 774mm diameter 245 / 70 R17 in.
BTW mine is such a tight fit I have to deflate it almost completely first!
Also because it's a 285 I have to use a car jack to fit the standard plough towbar, not that I need to push it up much just enough to make sure it locks in.
And yes before anyone recommends a Mitchell Hitch - I know!
I just don't use the hitch often.

Thanks Rob - glad to hear someone has already stuck a steel wheel in there and lived to tell the tale! 8)
Graeme - I had 4 BFG MT KM2's in LT245/70R17 and they're excellent! Seeing that I only had an 18" alloy with AT for a spare, I thought I had better get another MT+steel spare - considering where I'm heading. Lucky that I did start the search too - I managed to get as far as I know - the last BFG MT in that size, in the whole country! Michelin have another shipment about to arrive - but they are already sold! So the soonest someone could get them in would be about 3-6 months! It really makes ordering direct from USA look attractive.
FWIW, the BFG MT was originally in Bob Jane Geelong - and my local store arranged for it to be shipped up here. Unlike two other Bob Jane stores - that couldn't be bothered even looking in their computer for it!
Good luck to anyone trying to get a set! I suggest that a group buy from USA might be the go.

Thanks Jonesy63. I've always liked tyres to be a bit on the narrow side in sloppy stuff, but am keen to import 6 MTRs - just got to get the 17" setup sorted first.Home of LLAMS, for LRs and Jeep GCs
OK - I now have a steel wheel/BFG MT in the spare wheel well. It is a tighter fit than the 265/60R18 that was there - but also gives a bit more clearance - being 20mm narrower.
Thanks everyone!

I have BFG 265/70-17 with steel rim on the Disco and one spare wheel located underneath the car.
You just need to reduce pressure and it will fit perfectly.

I know its different, but I've got a 265/50x20 spare, and this is 2428, so only 6mm smaller than the 245/70x17 at 2434, and wider on a 9,5inch wide 20" alloy, which I would have thought weighed as much, and I've not had any issue with the which lifting this in and out, and I dont deflate it to get it in.

I've had a set of Maxxis Bighorn 265 70 17 on steel rims for a few months now - just decided to put the spare underneath found it aq little mdifficult fitting it in - had to let all the air out. Yes I used soapy water and tried tilting the tyre in first - just too big - may be OK when I've worn a bit of rubber off and put a used one in instead

That comparison tool looks useful. Is it available on the web anywhere ?
