Hi Lee - Welcome!
The central diff lock tends to only engage when the car decides it needs to. And it has a number of stages of 'lock' too.
Same with the rear axle lock, if you happen to be lucky to have one - most don't.
Not like older Land Rovers that are either locked, or not.

Whilst not as detailed, this (from an unremembered source) is also handy for D3/LR3 owners...

* second had a failure of the water outlet on top of the engine (pls check yours)

Chris, good post! I remember you turning up to East of England LRE for one of the Disco3 weekends, in your Punto, in rather inclement conditions!
Good job you had a few Land Rovers around to get you out!
IME, when in low range the centre & rear diffs are pre-locked (you can see it on the display to be about 30% locked). When in high range, they stay unlocked until traction is lost.--

Hi, I’m new to this so be gentle
I have 4x4 info, but only the center diff locks on one program, think it’s mud and ruts.
It only seems to show it’s locked when put it in drive. Hope that makes sense.
Any additional information would be greatly appreciated. Lee
Most Discos / RRS don't have the locking rear diff so only the centre diff will show as locking. You should see the diff locking on 4x4 info when in rock crawl. It's variable in others - I was using grass/snow mode yesterday and, in high range, the centre diff didn't lock until the traction control was working hard. The centre diff then fully locked up. I think in low range, the diff locks earlier which makes sense as low range would be expected to be used in more challenging conditions.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Watch out the hill decent control on a side slope. I had it engaged on a very wet slippy undulating side slope due to Grass gravel snow selected on TR , took my foot of throttle at top of a rise , still a side slope, the hill decent came in to slow me down as the vehicle was above the threshold speed, it momentarily locked the rear wheels, which made the whole back end slew sideways down the slope and of course the electronics cannot do anything sliding sideways!

Had the chance yesterday to use my disco 3 in very slppary conditions on slopes that I normally drive D1s on with bald or road tyres, that we use for training, I personally don’t like HDC as it induces slides on our site, but found my centre diff lock only works whilst driving if there’s slip, I couldn’t lock it in anyway which gave me a very tight cheek moment as I slide sideways between trees on a down hill slope just using engine braking. From experience I know that a locked diff would have kept me straight.
Question is, How can I lock my centre diff?Discovery 3 HSE 07

Under rock crawl mode it says "enables extreme suspension articulation"
How so?

@jekyllman
I assume that as Rock Crawl mode instructs you to raise the suspension thus giving the wheels further travel (also extended mode access) therefore this would equate to "enables extreme suspension articulation".LeighW

If it detects something is under the vehicle it raises the suspension to the maximum height, a setting you cannot achieve anyother way so that you can clear the obsticle.
Select this option and then place a jack under the car and raise it slightly, the car should then raise itself up.Andrew
