Things for an American visiting Southampton area
Hi all,
I've been contacted by an American work colleague who's flying with his wife to the UK at the end of April, he'll be landing in London and driving down to Southampton for a cruise around Britain, but has 3 days & 2 nights before then and was asking for some thoughts on places to go and sites to see.
He's already planning to do Stonehenge, but was looking for some ideas, he said

We both like whiskey and wanted to see Stonehenge. We love castles and the outdoors. Maybe a suggestion on where to stay one night enroute from London to Southampton
Any thoughts welcome Iggy/Ieuan

What about staying near Portsmouth? Not far from Southampton, historic dockyard museum with HMS Victory & Mary Rose museum, D-Day museum, boat tour round harbour. Short ferry ride and walk to Submarine museum in Gosport.

I'd second the Portsmouth suggestion, we spent a day and half on the historic boatyard and associated bits.==================================

Forget Stonehenge, Avebury/Silbury Hill/West Kennet Long Barrow are far more interesting and empty at that time of year

Winchester Cathedral and the nearby Great Hall??
And as a pompey lad, I'd always say that the best thing near Scumhampton is Portsmouth

If he wants castles then Portchester or Arundel (Arundel has a lot more in the area), then there is the Roman Palace at Fishbourne near Chichester, Weald and Downland Museum north of Chichester at Singleton.DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

Forget Stonehenge, it's not finished yet
Also the system for visiting it from the car park is not very reliable and most visitors are first time visitors based on the adverting hype and are disappointed when they see the real thing.
I can almost guarantee nobody ever visits it more than once apart from the nutters that believe in magic and fairies.

Why, what did you miss the first time ?
I was ferreting there once and a load of Japanese tourists took more pictures of me the ferrets and dead rabbits than Stonehenge itself.
English Heritage reckoned the rabbits burrowing by the stones would cause them to collapse !!
