If he wants castles then Portchester or Arundel (Arundel has a lot more in the area), then there is the Roman Palace at Fishbourne near Chichester, Weald and Downland Museum north of Chichester at Singleton.
To an accidental tourist it seems like England (haven’t been north) is full of castles but these are my favorites.
Arundel Castle is very nice and has a beautiful library. I would add to the list Leeds castle in Maidstone and Hastings battlefield and castle. They are a bit to the east but should be “on the way” to Portsmouth particularly if the starting point is London (Harwich for us). Weather in April should/could be nice enough to enjoy castle grounds, too.

Don't believe in magic etc, have been 4 times.
Why, what did you miss the first time ?
I was ferreting there once and a load of Japanese tourists took more pictures of me the ferrets and dead rabbits than Stonehenge itself.
English Heritage reckoned the rabbits burrowing by the stones would cause them to collapse !!
If you have to ask then you obviously just see a pile of old stones, each to thier own.==================================

Hi all,
I've been contacted by an American work colleague who's flying with his wife to the UK at the end of April, he'll be landing in London and driving down to Southampton for a cruise around Britain, but has 3 days & 2 nights before then and was asking for some thoughts on places to go and sites to see.
He's already planning to do Stonehenge, but was looking for some ideas, he said

We both like whiskey and wanted to see Stonehenge. We love castles and the outdoors. Maybe a suggestion on where to stay one night enroute from London to Southampton
Any thoughts welcome
Forget Stonehenge, Avebury/Silbury Hill/West Kennet Long Barrow are far more interesting and empty at that time of year
Agree Stonehenge very overated unless you are into that sort of thing

Greenham Common Newbury was an USA air base. 101st Airborne Division/D Day etc. Cruise missile bunkers still there, but mostly restored to common land. If WW 1 of any interest then Sandham Memorial Chapel at Burghclere near Newbury worth a visit. It has a collection of paintings by Stanley Spencer.
30 - 45 minutes from Southampton.

I drive past Stonehenge 2 or 3 times a month and I've visited it numerous times throughout my life, often with friends who are staying and have never seen it before. I live about 35 minutes drive from it.
It's probably the most famous prehistoric monument in the world and I still find it totally awe inspiring. How the stones got there c.5,000 years ago and the fact that they are aligned to the winter solstice sunset and the sunrise of the summer solstice, I find it all fascinating.
Agree that Avebury, Silbury Hill and West kennet Long Barrow are equally worth visiting as I've also done many times.
I'm not a Druid and I don't have a "powered by Fairie dust" sticker on my car .

Glad I am not alone, wife and I love prehistoric sites and dont mind getting on our hands and knees to get inside some too. Have you ever been to Malta it has some amazing megalithic temples?
Hetty Peglar's Tump well worth the crawl, even with the bats and cave spiders in residence

I find such structures amazing, c. 5000 years old. How some of them align perfectly with the light on the sunset/sunrise on the solstices is just mind blowing.

I live less than five minutes away from it and no longer find it interesting.
Nobody knows for sure how they got there, everybody has their own theory, I have mine - Aliens -end of.
