Timing Failure

After browsing the service log of my 2007 TDV6 SE got me worried about the oil pump casing, it mentions belts (about 25-30k before I bought it in 2017), not the oil pump. I decide on my next week off I'll have it apart to check. A week later with no more than 8 days til I get that week off, I'm pulling away & everything dies, and no restart. E/M light on the dash, but no faults when testing with the IID tool.

So after going through every other option, off comes the timing belt cover and out falls the tensioner with a lump of metal attached - aaaannd that answers both questions.

Checked the sump, no metalware lying about, ran a large magnet through the drained oil - a very, very small amount of very fine 'filings'. And none in the sump itself.

After a few more hours this week I finally get the first valve cover off today, the timing chain snapped along with three brackets loose (3 sheared bolts) down the length of one of the camshafts.

The question is, what's the likelihood of damage further down into the block with these?

I know there's a couple of threads, one of which https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/diy-cambelt...diy+timing
where heads have been replaced, not much on whether they survived much longer or whether they're still running however.

Are there any recommendations for where to buy rebuilt / reconditioned heads?

"New Engine" always seems to be in the answers of similar threads, is this due to the likelihood of much more damage being present below the heads?

You seam handy with spanner’s.
so that removes labour costs.

So it’s worth ago ?

Just get second hand heads and cams off eBay.
New chain

Once you have inspected pistons.

Reasonably handy Smile Although after today, my fingers and bruised arms are telling me otherwise! It seems various brackets and other metalware is placed in the perfect position to damage hands with every turn of a spanner/socket! Pretty sure these machines should feature in the Hellraiser series of films Very Happy

Looks like the cylinder heads may come out with the body on, the lack of lift for the body may force that option, it just looks like a complete nightmare.

I tend not to have much trust in ebay purchases, although something like these look like a better option if anyone has had a good experience with these or similar?

My concern is with any potential damage deeper into the block

Left side head removal is a right pain due to rear belt.

The job is no fun but can be done.

I would recommend autoreserve for heads off eBay. Jag heads are the same.
The key point is to ensure they come with cams.
And ideally pulleys.

I wouldn’t spend money on recon heads. As you say the bottom end could be in doubt and not last many years.

Good idea to replay glowplugs while out espically failed ones.

Replacing engine is even more difficult.

I'll have to look into that, I would've thought one that's had at least some pressure testing and some refitting would have been a slightly better option, given the prices aren't a world apart?

Think I'll try pulling one of the heads off this weekend to see what state the 1st side is in and see if that answers a few more questions. Although assuming everything does go back together getting arms down the back to replace belt and tensioner..... looks like another ordeal.

If the prices are similar. Fair enough

Replacing the belt is easy bit. The plastic cover is the difficult bit
