Warranty Direct - another recommendation

I have a Dec 2005 HSE which I've owned from new and has now done 136,000 miles. Had the warranty direct luxury (? the all in policy) policy until they would no longer cover me a couple of years ago . They dropped me down a peg but I didn't think it covered enough for the cost.

They then offered me a £99 policy which only covers me if I break down and need to be recovered back to the garage. Seemed like a no brainer, especially when they included main dealer rates and removed the no betterment clause. Just a £50 xs.

I have needed it twice now, last year (in last years policy) for the passenger side wheel bearing. They paid up no problem. Just had the same again this year on the driver side, and again they paid up but reduced the parts by 50% for wear and tear. A cheque came though within a few days.

Queried this deduction, expecting a big argument, and the lady checked the policy and said 'that doesn't seem right, please hold' and after a few minutes apologised and said a mistake had been made and they sent me a cheque for the balance.

Top service, cant fault them.

In my mind, £99 to cover me for a engine going bang or something big failing is brilliant value. I'm not too worried about the small items, but it's the major components that scare me about running an 8 year old motor... so this fits the ticket perfectly.

Anyway , just thought i'd share that!

Just had a look on the WD website and couldn't see a policy like the one you describe. Any idea what the policy is called?

I bought my 2010 D4 HSE in August this year and got a 6 month 'Warranty' from the Dealer.

On reading the document most of the important things are not covered. Not a lot of the electronics etc., etc.

My son, Iain, was organising a Warranty with Warranty Direct for his ML and happened to mention that I'd recommended him as I'd had an Audi A8 with them.

That conversation led to Warranty Direct offering me a Warranty in parallel with the Dealer one which will cover all the missing Dealer items but if I don't use it then when the Dealer one expires the WD one takes over for 13 months on their 13 for 12 deal all at a very reasonable cost.

That's a good deal anywhere Thumbs Up

Oh, yes, Iain will get £20 for recommending me!

Stew,

my policy is called "ExtraCare Lite 12 months", and covers VAT registered garage up to £200 per hour and no betterment (i.e. 100% of parts cost). But only applies if you have to be recovered to the dealer.

I normally don't think warranties are worth the paper they are written on but after seeing the positive comments on here I got a quote the other day online and i'v just had a phone call, they said my mileage is to high at 107k for the full warranty but offered me the breakdown warranty as you have mentioned above, seems a no brainer for me aswell, it's £135 (I mentioned you had only paid £99 but he said it may be because your a ongoing customer, fair enough) only thing is i'v got the 50% parts charge, do you think I will be able to get this changed? All in all though I'm pretty happy for the peace of mind. Just one more thing though, I'm surprised you bit recovered for a wheel bearing, massive result that, was it just noisey or had it totally collapsed?

They also don't have this policy on their website so give them a ring, you don't even need fsh (although I have) just a recent one, they give you 30 days or 1000 miles to get one done if you havn't

My wheel bearing was a real screamer and I was driving from Cotswolds to Sussex so felt unsafe.

With warranty direct you have to play them a bit by saying no, too expensive etc and see what they come back with. I have been with them for four years now, and I think the policy limit is 150,000 miles but not sure if that is at start of year or end. I hope to get 1 more year out of them! I can't believe I can get a warranty on a 135000 8 year old discovery so reckon it's a no brainer. I'm worried about the engine or transmission going so that is why. I can deal with. 500 repairs but would hate a £5k bill.

I think he might have said 160000 miles, I'll check when I ring to see if they can change the betterment, wish me luck, I like the idea of having peace of mind, I suppose as long as you can convince the recovery company to take you to a garage then warranty direct will pay for it Smile

Who makes the call on whether you need to be recovered or not, is it the breakdown company? I know if your crankshaft is lying in the middle of the road it's a no brainer, but I've lost count of the times I've had serious issues with Land Rovers over the years but technically it would not be considered unsafe to continue.

Also is there an excess to pay?

Would be no good for me as never had a claim after being recovered. It's normally things that have been spotted at the service or problems that have developed while driving.

I'm struggling to get them to remove the betterment fee, he says as it has done over 100k (it's done 107k) I said I won't bother taking it out and they just said ok lol? Any advice for bargaining ?

I used to be a WD customer but had a big falling out with them after a claim they refused to honour in full. I took them to the Financial Ombudsman Service who found in my favour and forced WD to pay up.

I now "self insure" by paying what I was paying to WD into a separate bank account and when I last checked, I was up to nearly £3000 pounds in it. I know that won't pay for an engine change, but with a car of my age, neither would WD pay the full amount.

I assume in the case of your engine they decided that the cost of the replacement engine was more than the value of the car? With continuing depreciation there's going to be a whole load of D3s in that boat. Big Cry Big Cry
