I have not picked my discovery up yet and don't get it till April next year but been trying to learn more about my car before I get it. there is a lot of engine failures the ones I have read are all bottom end. is this the only failing point or is there more. is this problem a thing of the past or will I experience it on my 2014 car In the future.
and is there any way of preventing this problem i.e engine specialist takes engine out rebuilds bottom end with custom parts that wont fail like the LR ones have been
any thoughts would be great
thanks for your time and help
Mark I hate it when people see me at the supermarket and they're like 'Hey, what are you doing here?' I tell them 'You know.. hunting elephants.' -

To be fair, I think you'll find engine failures were more common on the 2.7 litre TDV6 diesel than they are on the 3.0 litre STDV6 used in the current version.
The engine block on the STDV6 is quite porous and regularly checking and if necessary topping up the oil level, especially in the early days and weeks will usually prevent problems occurring further down the line.

They fitted press fit bearings on the crank - which had a habit of rotating. They continued this method on the D4 - but I'm not sure if they have altered the manufacturing process to resolve this one, but some say that they have. Mark.

TDV6 3.0 litre engine failure for me Mark Hope at 14k miles / 11 months, and engine problems within weeks of ownership. I don't need to point out the engine problems I have with the second engine either. it's well documented. Needless to say I carry top-up oil in my car, check it fortnightly, and have never had to add any myself. But that is probably 'cos it's back in the dealer so regularly, they do all the top-ups it needs!
Back to the day I bought the car... I still remember the road test with the Land Rover salesman at Harwoods Croydon. He told me how fab the car was, and it drove well, so I asked him what the negative aspects of LR ownership were. After a long pause (obviously not asked that questions regularly), he told me "reliability", before adding that LR had improved things massively in the latest generation of cars, and it was getting better all the time. I should have no concerns about swapping from back-to-back faultless BMWs, he suggested...
Should have done more reading online. Within weeks the problems began.
The Discovery 4 is the most amazingly competent and all-rounded car. But what the press road tests don't pick up on when they give it the 4 / 4.5 stars they so regularly do is the problems which also lurk with long-term ownership in some cars. I should have seen the number of posts on this faults board and thought twice.
Good luck with yours. Hope you have a build slot on any day other than a Friday afternoon
Or if you are having second thoughts, I have a living room sporting brochures for every SUV on the market bar the Discovery. When I replace my smoker some time in the next 12-ish months, I will (sadly) be looking at a lot of alternatives before taking the Land Rover gamble again. 747_JK
