Off-Road Heaven
Having got a taster for a bit of sand driving on the Snowy River last year, I couldn't wait to venture a bit further - roughly 2,300Kms further in fact - to the largest sand island in the world, Fraser Island, off the Queensland coast. Pretty much every 4WD TV show and magazine tells you that it's a 'must do' for any 4WD enthusiast. They weren't wrong.

That looks awesome. When I see pictures like that, it makes me want to pack up and move to Aus.
Cheers

Thanks for the nice comments on the pics.
As Michele mentioned, only 4WD vehicles are permitted to go onto the island. The Queensland authorities suggest that only those 4WD with high clearance and low-range capability are suitable. As you soon as you turn off the beach, including 75 mile beach (which is the main road, all pictures except the last), to the numerous inland tracks (all sand and similar to last picture), you can understand why. Our camping neighbours took a trip to one of the inland lakes and it took them 1 hour to do 9Km!
It was actually getting off/onto the beach where we found the most challenging sand conditions - very soft and rough. No problem without the trailer, but not ashamed to admit that I needed to be pulled out after getting bogged in one particularly soft and deep patch coming back onto the beach for our return journey! In hindsight I should've probably dropped my tyre pressures even lower. Oh well, justified the $80 on the snatch strap and all part of the learning experience I suppose!
Another pic waiting for the Mantaray ferry back to mainland.

How cruel..... Just woken up to yet another damp, dreary Monday, car covered in frost...about to head off for 2.5 hour journey on the London M25 motorway and you post that!
As they say 'one life live it' looks like you are!
Thanks!

Hi Richard,
Always wanted to do Fraser Island but the boss has booked us to go to Europe again this year.
Very impressed with your photography, some of the best I've seen of Fraser but perhaps I am biased as they all show a D4.
I noticed your tyres aren't standard, what are you running? I have 20" rims and are looking for something a little more suited for exploring without being too intrusive noise wise around town.

Hi Barry,
Well spotted. I changed to the Cooper Zeon LTZ tyres last year. Cheaper than the replacement Wranglers (approx $350/ea for set of 4), guaranteed for 60K Km and look great! No noticeable increase in road noise either. Really pleased with them. I think Cooper make them for 20" rims but not sure.
Good luck with getting to Fraser one day.

Looks absolutely stunning, makes a nice change from our 'off-road' excursions over here which are always enjoyable but often damp, cold and muddy!!
