hot electrical burning smell
Folks - every so often I get a really strong smell in the cabin, something akin to something electrical either burning or getting very hot (for those old enough, a burnt Bakelite smell)
It lasts a few mins and then clears, and its not after I have turned anything on, its just at random times
I had noticed a similar smell after being parked up for a while with the engine running, but in this case the smell seems to be from outside.
Quite concerning as I dont want me pride and joy going up in smoke.
ideas?
Al
PS, its isnt the burnt diesel smell of the FBH - I know what that smells like!Volvo XC90 B5 Plus Dark

Keep a fire extinguisher handy It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

DPF is not electric, just uses extra hot exhaust gases. Given the profile of my normal journey to work (50 mins country roads) I never smell mine but they do smell hot with a slight whiff of electrics when they go into full blast mode. Nominally this should occur around every 450 miles and takes 20 minutes, but this will vary due to driving conditions. Some have commented that the exhaust sounds different or more throaty too. Clearly if you park or stop before it achieves the 20 mins you get the 600degC smell.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

smell I got was just after I had set off from a cold engine start. windows wound up, so thought it had come from inside the car at the time, but could have come through the ventsDuncan

I had this about 2 weeks ago...strong acrid smell as mentioned....put it down to an external source as I was parked up with the engine running briefly in town when it happened.....although it concerned me enough to stop a little while afterwards to check round the car and under the bonnet....couldnt see,or smell anything amiss,so put it down to another passing car....I'm now wondering if it was the DPF I got a blast of,and just coincidentally did it while I was parked.....pretty strong smell if it was....
I should point out this was after an hours drive, not starting from cold "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...
