How embarrassing...
Just seen the BBC news item about the closure of the Devon show...
Most of the tv pictures seem to feature a disco stuck in the car park and being towed out by a tractor.
How embarrassing - it doesn't even look very deep?

The earlier footage shows the front wheels were turned two thirds to the right which wasn't helping probably a novice ....however when there is no traction ...there is no traction 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Much to the amusement of the others at the last trip to the Lakes,I mistakenly parked on wet grass,with a couple of inches of waterlogged mud below.....even with ATR's on it wasn't looking good.
As said,low range,steering straight ahead (even tiny inputs were causing the wheels to spin and dig in) and feet off everything.
The Defender boys,cameras at the ready,were most disappointed "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool,than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

definately driver error
folk on this forum have been through worse conditions on Salisbury plain up hill on road tyres. that field look pretty flat with maybe a slight slope
maybe there was a steep hill prior to the pictures being taken.Duncan

In my D2 I have been stuck on wet grass with AT's on, I know it was on a hill but wet grass is as bad as ice once the tyre tread fills with that kind of mud, you are stuffed.Dale

To be fair, if you watch the 2006 G4 Challenge film, they did a special task in a wet paddy field in Thailand or Laos with RRS's.
The RRS's couldn't cope with the slippery conditions as the ETC assumed that as all the wheels were spinning with zero grip (as in the field above), the car must be sliding out of control and refused to apply any power. I think it was Brian, the UK contestant who admits on camera that to succeed on this task you have to remove the fuse from the ETC so that you could just floor it to get round the sodden field.
Whilst driver error is doubtedly a factor, this is because the driver is having to fight the technology. Sometimes only a lot of welly will get you out, and in the case of modern Land Rovers "computer says no"!
I had the same problem with my D3, if it was in the wrong terrain response mode it would shut down the engine when I crested a steep off road climb, which was handy Doesn't tell you that in the instruction book. Tony

There is some truth in this and the very thin mud on top of grass can turn a D3 / D4 into Bambi-on-ice. For the very worst possible combination try Wintrecs with there fine sipes on thin mud laden grass on a gentle adverse camber.

I suppose nothing can beat real physics! 8) The only way not to get stuck in such a situation (if the mud is too bad) with a three tone Disco is precautionary measures, i.e. not go in there!

Wonder who provided a few hints for you..
From experience, no matter what tyres you have on, sometimes no matter what you try and do. Switch on/off etc.

Maybe they didn't turn the DSC off. Whilst it does not completely disable the traction control, it does stop the nanny computer reducing the power when you really need it. So at least you can floor it and get stuck in a blaze of glory flying mud and crap
However, that did look like particularly slippery mud, so maybe we all would have got bogged!
