New MY15 Discovery in Santorini ordered. |
|
Thought I'd start my own thread seeing as I have now ordered the new Discovery.
I have been a member since 2006 but haven't been around too much. Had a Discovery 3 S model in Zambesi silver between 2005-2008. It was an excellent all round car and one that my wife, who has no passion at all for cars, absolutely loved. After wanting another Discovery for quite a whole now, the time is right and a really good deal was offered by Westover Salisbury on the military discount scheme. So, we went for it - SE Tech model with slightly more than the standard 13% discount. Looked at used D4s but buying on finance just doesn't stack up compared to new. Wife chose Santorini Black and Almond/arabica interior and other than that I was happy with the spec. I held off with the rear view camera and 20" wheels which we have in the X5 as I needed to keep costs down.
Hopefully delivery will be late September. I need to add some accessories and have already got some good prices from Duckworths and brad@Exeter, but will see what the dealer comes up with. I am looking for:
sidesteps - best price is £615 inc VAT (not fitted)
Mudflats front and rear - £127 inc VaT (not fitted)
Cargo barrier - dog guard
Rubber boot mat.
Dealer is including rubber mats for me. I am not good at DIY so fitting the steps and flaps is not a job I can do.
The other extra I would have liked is privacy glass, does. Anyone have any idea roughly how much it would cost to have this done aftermarket?
Is anyone else from the North West? Discovery SE Tech Santorini Black - ordered for Sep/Oct!

Thanks
Haven't yet officially been given a build slot, it's educated guess thus far but I assume the salesman does have a decent handle on these things! Discovery SE Tech Santorini Black - ordered for Sep/Oct!

Thanks Stu, factory fitted privacy glass is £405, so it would seem to make sense to have it fitted aftermarket. I am pretty sure the dealer would not forget to charge me if I asked for it! Discovery SE Tech Santorini Black - ordered for Sep/Oct!

I have an HSE with aftermarket tints, came with it when i brought it. its looks great from a distance, b the car is now 4 years old and close up you can see small chips and scratches all over which would not be there if it were factory glass. The seat belt being flung about by the kids is the best one for causing this and me with the odd slip with something in the back.
Now i'm all for saving money but i do not see the point in trying to save £100 pound to have a aftermarket finish when you've just spent 50K on a new motor.
I get fitting genuine parts after to save money like a cool box, remote heating blah blah, my point being just be careful where you try and save money.

I've had both before and wouldn't go aftermarket again.
Depends how fussy you are, they will never get it 100% perfect.

Privacy glass every time for me ...so much so that I would reject the car if they got it wrong
Aftermarket tints show the antennas in the glass as well !! G4 Gone ...but not forgotten

The factory tint glass by pilkinton is far superior that after market stuff.
On pilkintons site they have info on how much heat reduction their glass is over after market tints.
When we were looking for our old D3 we were specifically looking for factory it it with the sundym glass. It can cut heat transfer by something like 60%. Really helps keep the dogs cool in the back.
Although now MY14 has the rear aircon back that'll help them. Ian

Thanks for the comments re privacy glass and tints. I am still not minded to spec the factory as it just begins to edge the overall cost up too much for me, I'd rather be spending that money on steps and mudflats to be honest. I had aftermarket tinted glass fitted to a previous Mercedes GL320 by the dealer, I seem to remember that was fine and was negotiated as part of the deal on a stock car. Whether or not I actually decide to have tints done in the D4 will ultimately be up to the Mrs! Discovery SE Tech Santorini Black - ordered for Sep/Oct!

If you are trying to stick to a budget why not get the factory fitted privacy glass and then have aftermarket side steps fitted?

That's a good point. Sidesteps are a priority over privacy, privacy being cosmetic and sidesteps have a large element of practicality. I know little about aftermarket steps, quality etc. My feeling is that I would rather have OEM steps on a brand new car, maybe I am being OTT. Having said that some of the OEM style steps on ebay look remarkably similar to the LR Product, even to the extent that I wonder if they are made in the same factory! I may be wrong as I don't have side steps but I have seen plenty.
If I was guessing I would say it would be harder to differentiate between OEM sidesteps and Genuine LR sidesteps than it would between aftermarket and LR privacy glass.
Also if the OEM sidesteps turned out to be you could always fit the genuine ones at a later date or perhaps go for sliders
You couldn't do that with the glass.
Your choice

I went for factory fit privacy glass, for the cost saving I thought it better to have glass than film, trivial point but glass also has the three year warranty, but what can go wrong with glass I'm not quite sure.

As a matter of interest and to provide a baseline for cost, I just emailed the local LR dealer and asked for a price for sidesteps and mudflaps fitted.
The answer was £1192...... I fell off my chair! Discovery SE Tech Santorini Black - ordered for Sep/Oct!
