Hi all,
I was wondering if you guys had noticed any slack/play in the dead ahead position, a movement of say 1cm or so either side before any linkage or wheel movement occurs?
Is this normal?

Neo,
I had some knocking appear and subsequent loose feel of the steering wheel after a day out in the mud. I heard that there was a TSB on this issue so took it back to LR and they promptly changed control arm or shaft or something, regardless.... the noise and slack in wheel disappeared. What's the point.... it all comes out in the wash anyway!

I've had the lower steering shaft replaced 10k miles ago and it fixed the knocking noise but it's coming back now, and sometimes the steering can feel a bit vague when on a rough surface, but there isn't any obvious slack in it though.
This time they're going to replace the whole steering rack and the lower shaft as aparrantly quite a few have had play in the steering racks which was misdiagnosed as being the steering shaft.
Note that my D3 was outside this VIN range as have others that have had the problem too.

Well, diagnosis at the dealer determined that a new lower shaft was required, so it is going to be sorted hopefully next week.
A TSB exists and my vin fits in the 'dodgy' group.

Only had the Disco a month but noticed knocking from steering just after I bought it and rattling from front when on rough roads or in a field. Car is in for new steering column (not sure how much of it) and anti roll bar bushes. I'll see if that works!

I have this loose knocking problem through the steering on bumpy roads, however my car is out of the VIN range, does this mean it is going to cost me?

Only if its out of warranty and/or you've done something that it aint supposed to do and the dealer you use is rubbish
Get them to check it out then let you know.
