Presumably to stop big branches from hitting the driveshaft, potentially damaging the CV perhaps........
If you didn't have the shield there, what damage would have been done to the shaft/joints...?Bodsys Brake Bible

Mine did this on the Salisbury event earlier in the year. Drove home expecting the rear diff to explode at any minute!
I think it protects the prop shaft joints from heat from the exhaust.

I think you are talking about the heat shield between the tailshaft ( that's the long cylindrical thingy) and the exhaust (fat hot thing that makes you say ouch when you touch it)
