Michelin Synchrones fitted |
|
Got my new tyres today, had a last minute thought last night about not getting them, but I need good tyres now and I have a fair few miles to do next week.
So, £650 quid inc vat and balancing gets me 4 x 255 x 55 x 19" Michelin Synchrone 4x4 tyres. They look very similar to the Wrangler, except that the side wall has a much thicker rim protection band, and the tread pattern whilst similar to the G'years, has rounded corners rather than squared off.
I have only done about 5 miles on them in traffic so far, but they do seem very quiet at low speed. The Wranglers would growl noticably on smooth surfaces, the Synchrones are quiet.
Whilst the rears were off, I noticed that the rear brakes are almost on the metal. The car goes in for its 30k service next Friday so they will have to change them.

Thanks Gareth, so far so good. However it would appear that Michelin deny manufacturing any tyres at all for the 18inch wheels (255 60 R18 112v). Their website doesn't even provide an option to select the Michelin Wranglers that are already on there ?
My dealer (Lloyds Land Rover) tell me that they are fitting Pirelli tyres to replace Michelins now (unless a customer specificaly wishes to use another tyre) but so far they haven't been able to suggest any "winter" tyre alternatives for my size.
Has anyone on this forum already "tracked down" a winter alternative in the 255 60 18 size that is rated for a beast as heavy and as "quick" as the D3 ? Disco 4 TDV6HSE

Just been for a good run, and they are very quiet. All of the droning/rumbling has gone. Much better in a straight line, it does not seem to "tramline" as much.

Kaneys General Grabbers are 255/55 R18 which slightly undersize but they obviously work
You're right, no sign of the right ones on the Michelin site
Goodyear site shows the Wranglers HPs in the right size and the 19" MT/R The End

I'm finding all these tyre names a bit of a blur - is there anyone who could list the options by wheel size and for Martin to make it a sticky in the relevant section?
Something like:
17"
standard road
goodyear wrangler
michelin synchrone
pirelli scorpion zero
Mud & Snow
General Grabber AT etc.... Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana

I've done 500 miles now. The fuel consumption seems to be the same, although I have hit a lot of delays on my journeys this week.
The noise reduction is remarkable, especially at motorway speeds. To be fair on the Goodyear, the Wranglers were quiet when they were new, so it will take a while to see if the Synchrones remain this quiet.
One thing is noticable, the Synchrones firm up the ride a bit. It seems to feel the bumps a little more, but it does feel more responsive to the steering. I suspect the tyre has a stiffer construction. Could be just that they are new and bedding in.
To be continued.

By the book
Can you take a few photos of them when you get time so we can see the tread pattern? Be interesting to see how it compares with the Pirellis The End

Update. The Synchrones are now nearing the end of their life. The miles on the car when I got them was 30k, now its on 76k. I have had my spare 17's on for about 10k of that.
Mileage seems to be very good. They still have a few thousand left. They have remained quiet and smooth driving. They have stayed in balance and have performed very well on road and occasionaly off.
No problems at all.

Look at this link, I can confirm Costco stock these for the £140 inc VAT

Good that these are available for D3 now. Had Synchrones on my Disco2 which were really good and lasted forever. A colleage with a D2 did 140.000km's/approx 85.000mls on them.
I changed to lattitudes about 10.000 km ago. They performed well, also on snow, and are quite silent. However, I can't say anything about longevity sincy I sold the Disco2 and am waiting for delivery of my D3 (2005 HSE manual) in approx 2 weeks... The new one has 18" wheels and I will no doubt have Latitudes fitted when the present tyres are worn.
Regards,
Thomas
