MY12 D4 wallowy ride
Hi All
Have had my MY12 HSE for about 3 weeks now and just been on my first decent (250 mile) weekend trip in it. I am slightly disappointed by the bouncy / wallowy ride on undulating A and B roads. It may just be that they all do this, but I have to say driving it at any reasonable speed on anything other than perfectly smooth roads makes me and my wife feel a bit sick. I cant drive at anything like the speed i would have in my previous car (Merc E class estate). I initially thought the tyre pressures might be a bit low, but I have adjusted these to 36/39 front/rear and it doesn't seem to have made any difference. I have 19inch wheels with Pirelli Scorpion Zeros on the back and Wrangler HPs on the front which from what i can tell are sensible on-road tyres?
Should I be concernced ? are their any known suspension issues worth checking out or will i just get used to it over time? Its under LR warranty for another 3 months so keen address anything that might be recitfiable under this.
would really welcome some thoughts on how to diagnose if there is an issue / what other people's experiences are having come from other types of car.

Wallowy is not usually associated with a D4 at all. It is a big vehicle but the suspension is good at keeping it under control.
Worth getting it checked or perhaps drive another D4 so work out if it is you or the vehicle.

Having had a Discovery in the past then moving to a normal car, then back to a Discovery we were surprised how much wallow there was on the motorway, so much so that something must be wrong with it!
In fact it was us that needed to adjust from a normal car to a Discovery.
It might be worth have a 4 wheel alignment done and also change all the tyres to Pirelli with correct pressure.
We did find that cheaper tyres made the car less stable.

I had a merc 320 avant-garde, and the D3 at the time did feel a bit wallowy.... but then so did all the other 4x4s I test drove. in fact the D4 was the less wallowy of them all.
the D4 will never handle like the Merc on the road.
it shouldn't make you feel sick though - try getting the suspension bushes and ARB drop arms checked for wearDuncan

many thanks for the feedback its really appreciated.
i suspect it is a case of me getting used to something new. I will be taking it in to the dealer a month before the warranty expires for a general going over, and will have got some more miles under my belt by that point so hopefully in combination i will know where i stand by then.
out of interest, what tyre pressures would you say were optimal for 19in wheels for on-road use in order to maximise mpg and handling? i was planning on playing around with them between 33-40psi but would be interested to hear people's thoughts.

just run them at the pressures listed on the side of the door.

When I was looking to replace my Disco 3 I tried a number at various dealers and found a vast difference between test drives .Some had really terrible ride and handling which I put down to worn bushes and/or poor wheel alignment. Properly set up the vehicle should feel fairly well planted on the road but probably not a match for an E class. If you can, try another vehicle to see if it is worse or better than yours.
