What to do with the trailer dots?

When my dealer handed over my D4 last week, he gave me the three-dot sticker and said "thats for the tow assist". When I looked at the manual, it says to refer to the dealer for fitting!

Can someone tell me what to do with the dots? Keep it clean please Laughing

I think you need to place it at the middle of the front of the trailer. Then, when you go into the tow assist function on the screen, you can edit your trailer (or caravan or horsebox etc). Once you have entered your towed vehicle dimensions, you have to line up the peripherals to the edge of the trailer as the camera sees it.

I have to be honest, I have not done this on mine, as I am pretty confident at reversing my caravan, and prefer to look out of the windows!

The dots stick to the front of your trailer in a specific place.

When you connect the electrics from your trailer to your car, the touch screen will ask if a trailer has been attached. Select yes and then go through the screens to set up the type of trailer that you have attached. You will need to input things like the number of axels and hitch length. One of the screens asks you to attach the dots anywhere within the yellow hatched area which is shown on the screen as an overlay using the rear camera. Once you have stuck the sticker on the trailer in the correct area, the hatched area on the screen will turn green. Complete the set up by driving forwards then backwards 50 yards or so (the system will tell you when it is happy) then you are good to go.

I'm sure I got this from my manual (I didn't make it up!) but I can't for the life of me find it now! Laughing

Hope this helps! Thumbs Up

Thanks both, I'll give it a try. Sounds more "technical" than I expected. Good old LR - I love this technology Thumbs Up

What is the supposed purpose of the dots then? do they help you hitch up or reverse the outfit?

Like Garath said, I've not bothered on my new one, but I'm sure as clubbed says all the set up instructions were displayed on the screen on my previous D4 Question

I believe it uses the dots and the rear camera to monitor the movement of the trailer/van and apply DSC to prevent snaking.

when you connect the trailer the display asks you to enter lengths etc of the trailer. you then stick the three dots to the trailer. if you look at the screen there will be a red shaded area. the sticker goes there and should change to Green when its correctly located. you then adjust a second set of red shaded areas to define the width of the trailer.

Thats good, but my caravan has never snaked, and it has its own anti-snake system, so I guess these dots might be better if used on an older trailer?

Here is the stability control, no dots noticeable here - and it says electrics do not need to be connected:

It does this as well as reversing help

You need the target to set up the trailer

Trailer Stability Control is available on all D4s. Tow Assist (which is used to predict the track of the trailer when reversing) is only available with the Surround Camera system and requires the dot sticker AFAIK. Thumbs Up

love the comment its almost unnoticeable

Towed my twin axle caravan for the first time with my new freelander 2 and the car decided to slam on the brakes twice, once just pulling on to the motorway and the second just as i passed a lorry

both times at about 60mph and both times without warning as i don't think the sway caused by the caravan been sucked in by the lorry or moving on to the motorway was any more than normal and acceptable

its a proper brown trouser moment when it happens but cars in dealers to be checked out as the old FL2's never did this and i towed with both in worse conditions
