VERY early D3's had park heat but never worked properly so was soon deleted from software.

D4 has same Fuel Burning Heater as ALL the diesels have as standard, and as Paddy tried to explain this is primarily there to keep the coolant water warm in cold weather (<5 deg c) because the diesel cycle is too efficient to have enough surplus heat for warming the cabin.

Park heat is an option and needs software activation Thumbs Up

I've not got access to all the MY specs but as far as I can see the HSE should have timed climate as standard, so not really sure why you do not have the option in your menu. Perhaps someone with the same MY could confirm what they have?

The photo you have posted is of a standard FBH with no island valve assembly. If/when you get timed climate enabled (or even better, the remote climate) the heat will circulate around the engine as well as the heater matrix. This wastes some of the heat but it is still effective.

This should have been removed under the 2006 enhancement programme. It indicated that this was not done or not done correctly, which is a shame as it included a number of desirable reliability fixes for the air suspension, electronics, turbo and EGRs as well as a welcome boost in low-down power and drivability.

Interesting thread this as I've been puzzled since I got mine what the point of having the heater under the bonnet was when I don't have the controls to use it.
Mine is a 2011 HSE (SDV6) so it would seem from this thread I should have the on-screen timing controls Confused
Recently had my Nanocom EVO upgraded to CAN-BUS so will have a go sometime to activate the system
It is interesting though that the main aim of the pre-heater is to warm the engine up on cold days....first time I've seen that discussed Thumbs Up

Yes, it very much is the case that the FBH prime role is to help heat the engine. Modern efficient diesels produce relatively little waste heat so take quite a while to heat up to full operating temperature. When the engine is cold it uses substantially more diesel due to part of the cylinder charge being wasted, so additional fuel is sprayed in at a sub-optimal part of the cycle to compensate.

The idea behind the FBH is to burn fuel in an efficient manner to warm the engine for efficient combustion and to provide more rapid warming of the heater matrix. In certain regards it is also an emissions fudge as whilst it does improve emissions efficiency when measured at the exhaust the contribution added by the FBH exhaust is not included in the emissions formally recorded for the vehicle.

Again, I do not have all the spec sheets so it could be the case that early HSEs did not have the timed climate in the software - the later ones certainly did.

So as I have not got the island value I can not direct the heat solely into the cabin...is that right?
Is it possible to fit the island value or is that just too much effort for little gain.

Is there anything else missing that would stop it working?

I'll surely want to activate the timed function if I can and it sounds pretty easy if you are in the know Wink
And I think the remote would be great on cold mornings!!

fitted a few remote timed climate to 2010/11 D4,s HSE that has not had on screen climate enabled and has worked pretty well Thumbs Up

There are many on the forum who use the remote/timed climate on the D4 without the island valve. The valve does add efficiency and can be purchased and fitted DIY. Doing this seems very popular in Germany but I am only aware of 1 forum member that has done this over here. I have the island valve and together with the extended run time it really is a very good system:

The island valve is the round silver thing bolted directly to the black FBH bracket with the warning sticker.

Thanks for all the advice!

I'm going to start then with asking the garage I use to active the on screen control and see how that goes.

When I have some spare ££ I'll certainly be interested in the remote version.

roughly how much for all parts and labour and are there any members in the Twickenham area who could do it for me Very Happy

Is this also something easy to get the remote parts on eBay or are they not too expensive and then not worth buying that way really, does anybody know the part number / or numbers?

Thanks for the heads up Robbie, so where would the 2006 enhancement programme have been carried out or should have been carried out. I have full dealer service history. Should if have been an automatic dealer job. As if my car still has it all enabled in the dash maybe its something they have missed Crying or Very sad

Think I may have turned it on myself inadvertently playing with the CCF settings. I get the little heated car dash light when i switch off now to.. Thats nice, however it don't appear to activate anything when i sit in there waiting fro the timer to switch it on.

Maybe ill just turn it back off if i can remember what setting it was Embarassed

Unless you do the radio trick the old FBH park heater function will not work.

The original software never worked because the databus was asleep. If you turn the radio on before the time set is due the radio keeps the databus alive and the message to start the FBH gets through. Back in 2004 it became known on the forum as the radio trick; all the other parameter must still be satisfied too in order for the FBH to light. The 'feature' was deleted in 2006 and on later vehicles the red FBH indicator light was repurposed as a green 'headlights on' indicator.

The red wire or not makes little difference to the ease of adding a remote such as the BAS system.
