Take it in and let them decide. You get a wash ans vehicle check if you want it and a piece of paper to say it's been looked at for when you come to sell.

That's what I was thinking would be the best thing yo do, but was wondering what the score was considering a fixed towbar was fitted fitted anyway. I have issues with our local dealer and wouldn't trust them to change a wheel on a wheelbarrow.

take your old one off...you may get a brand new free one....use another dealer

Sorry if this has been asked but I have booked in for the inspection but have lost my tow ball. I had to remove it with a large hammer as we were going off roading. Do they need it the woman said it would be ok. I think it's buried in the shed somewhere
Been using the brother in-laws d1 for towing.
Fixed tow bar wouldn't bother me to much do you think I would still be able to ask for one ?

Hmmm. My local dealer said that if I didn't have the removable towbar, which I don't, it didn't need to be tested and wouldn't give me an appointment.
Does that sound right? What if I were to buy a new removable towbar. Would it be safe or might there be an issue with the car end of the equipment?

Hi all
We visited Hatfields in Hull today had an appointment for 2pm for the tow bar to be checked while we waited, the detachable tow bar on our D3 had been in situ for years.
After about half an hour and a complimentary coffee we were told that they had carried out a safety check and informed me our D3 has slight corrosion on mid to rear brake pipes and offered £254 for the work, the service guy seemed to become a little embarrassed on further informing me they had found slight play in the prop shaft centre bearing and quoted over £900 to sort that out! He went on to tell me the tow bar was seized and they were having to drill the lock out.
A short time later I was told they had inspected the car and found that there was too much play, but that the cross member did not need replacing I was told they will be fitting the multi height tow bar when it goes in next week. They have fitted a new lock with two keys to my detachable tow bar and left it in the boot advising me not to use it.
I am left slightly confused, some seem to have no play others like mine need a new tow bar and some need a new cross member. How exactly is it determined? I am left wondering how I can still have a fixed tow bar in the same mounting as surely it will still have play? As for those that don't have any play what is to say they wont in a year or two?

Heavy duty towbar
Mine is booked in 5th October and the service dept have already informed me if I tow anything bigger than a box trailer it will need replacing with a heavy duty tow bar free of charge.
Does anyone have a photo of the heavy duty towbar which LR install and can it be removed easily if required.
Will LR let me keep the original detachable swan neck towbar?

Found this from a google search. It can be removed fairly easily but you have to get under the vehicle and undo a few bolts. make sure it doesn't fall down while you are under there, Im told it hurts.
I was told part of the LR procedure was removal of the swan neck from the vehicle. I didn't get mine back (well I did but they phoned me the next day to say I had to bring it back because they forgot to remove it).

Detachable tow bar
My first post !!
We have just ordered new MY 16 Disco with delivery quoted in November to replace FL2. We have ordered with detachable tow bar, does anyone know if LR are still stating for occasional use only. There are no details stating this on LR web site- Build your Discovery section under optional features tab and the salesman never advised that there are restrictions to its towing use. We tow 1700kg van around 12 times a year.

Jake,
Detachable tow bar is designed for occasional use, I would say once a month is occasional.
You just need to remove it after use and not leave it fitted all the time.

Agree with JMack, I use the LR detachable tow hitch & am happy to tow IW 511 horse trailer with 2 x c 550kg money pits in it on a regular basis (> 1x month, < 1x week).
This includes at least 6 journeys per year of 200 miles non stop.
The loads (total & nose) are within specs & guidelines but the key point is that I remove, check, clean & store the tow hitch after every tow trip.
Guava had the D4 in for its 4th service a couple of weeks ago & did the tow check with no problems reported.
