Just back from Beadles of Sidcup and as usual a friendly reception. Car checked and tow bar all within the allowed parameters, car thoroughly cleaned, nail removed from tyre and plugged all at no cost to me.
Was told that less than 5% of cars checked have failed the test.
Given results of health check and an addendum notice for the handbook.

It appears to be mostly D3 towbars which are being replaced.

New cross member and new removable tow bar!
Just to update, my car is now booked in for end November with Liverpool Hatfields. They (LR) have now agreed to replace my rear cross member and provide a new removable tow bar, all at no cost to me.
As this modification is going to take three days they have reserved a discovery sport for me also no cost.
So for me this is a good result, and hopefully I'll be pleased with the final outcome.
I'll update you all once it's fitted.....

Good news, towbar passed.
Bad news, front lower bushes and OSF are on their way out...De-Tango
V8 Brakes
EGRs blanked
Running boards
3 flash indicators and clock on dash
Blingy grille...
Had mine in on Friday, TBH i never really tow with mine, its kept in the stow hole 99% of its life, but they are going to fit a fixed one next week.
I wont keep it on the Car as i have an Uncle Ray NATO hitch for the Sankey
So my thought process is, as The Uncle Ray one uses the North American style recever can i not just buy the tow ball part to fit it for 1% of the towing i do ??
I can keep that in the car for the 1% of time i need a tow ball and Just put the rest back in for the Nato hitch when i need it

Detachable towbar recall experience
I recently took our Disco 3 in to Stratstone LR in Aylesbury to get the detachable towbar checked as per the Land Rover recall. Stratstone took an hour to do......absolutely nothing! They obviously didn't remove the unit in order to check for wear (as per the maintenance schedule from LR) as the key hole was still jammed up with grime when I got home; the dirt hadn't been disturbed and has been there sometime. I am now kicking myself for not checking it on the forecourt; all they did was wash the car ( not the towbar though). They made no mention of not being able to take the towbar off. I still have no guarantee that the towbar isn't worn! And have wasted an hour of my life on a Saturday morning.

When they checked mine they also didn't take it off. I believe the test can be done with the hook in situ, at least I'm sure I read that in the main thread regarding the safety call.Ted

The recall letter states that they will "inspect the towbar using a gauge special tool. When excessive wear is found....."
I fail to see how you can check for wear ( I assume to the main body of the towbar) without at least removing it.
They are looking for movement in the towbar / socket , if excess is found and more than the gauge they have then they'll take action , think of it as a large feeler gauge Altox GSM FBH controller thread

"Wear" in the context of the action prescribed is indicated and gauged with the tow-bar in situ. If it doesn't move during the test then it is deemed fit. They don't have to remove it.21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Dropped mine in this morning, got given a beeping fiesta! Speed limited too!
Told them we do a fair bit of towing including occasional heavy towing, but the guy on the service desk seemed to suggest if it I passes, I'll get it back as is, isn't a three stage process? Not worn and occasional towing - as is, not worn but used for constant/heavy towing - fixed towbar or worn - new cross member and fixed tow-bar.

i think thats poor with all the grief this has caused
just cos it dosent move on a quick wiggle dosent prove it
if thats all they are going to do then they may has well just ask the owners to see if theres moved themselves and bring it in if you feel yours moves excessively .
what it some foreign body crud etc has worked itself in to the gap and temperature effect has caused it to appear ok on a quick wiggle test
i think it should be removed the socket cleaned, gauge fitted then asessed.

MY14 XXV more buttons than the spaceshuttle
Was there ever any suggestion that it would be replaced if not worn?
Surely, towbar worn = new towbar, receiver worn = new crossmember or maybe just a fixed towbar if lightly worn?Current: Discovery 3 06MY (55 reg) HSE Auto Zambezi Silver Allisport Fast Road Intercooler, V8 Brakes, Silicone IC Hoses, EGRs Blanked, Remapped, De-Cat pipe, FBHIC
