Considering a change to a D4 - Anything i need to know?

Hi Folks,

New to all the D' things as I'm currently an E' man, so apologies if this is in the wrong place!

I'm a self-employed guy, Caravanner (1800kg's & 8 meters of it) expectant father later this year (1st one, Can't wait!) and currently drive an E Class Estate. E Class is struggling with the weight of the 'van and it wonders around - I've got power to spare, (204 bhp / 500NM) but don't have the stability to use it.

We're off to look at a D4 HSE tomorrow (2013 Model) to replace my E (Wife will get the E)

So... Questions are..

What should i look out for? - anything major? (It's only got 20,000 miles on it)
Extended warranty - Is it possible?
What can i expect to get out of it - MPG Solo & Towing?

Thanks in advance, Al.

As a 2013 car, there should be the balance of the three years warranty on it, and yes, you can either extend LR's warranty or there are after-market ones like Warranty Direct.

Economy wise, I get mid-20's knocking about, can get 32/33 on a run, and usually 18-22 towing depending upon roads/terrain. Mine is a 6-speed auto, so whether the 8-speed is any better, I don't know. Those figures are properly calculated by the way, not based upon the ridiculously optimistic lie-ometer!

yup, will have 2 years or so warranty left so should be ok and there shouldn't be anything major wrong at that milage.

From a MY 2012, so eight speed, my average over 28,582 miles is 26.58 by the RoadTrip app, the in car consumption is genarally 3 - 4 mpg high. Normal average is 26.5 to a tank, going down a bit in the winter with different fuel and fuel burning heater usage. That is mainly motorway driving with GG AT tyres. You should get around 1mpg more with road tyres.

I've never had 32 on any run and only seen into the 31s on three tank fulls.

I changed my E-class 320cdi estate for a D3 back in 2006 and have stuck with D3/D4s since.

whilst the Merc was nice, it wasn't in the same league as the D3/D4 - towing is far more stable - I tow a twin axle caravan and it pulls no problem in all weathers and is very stable when overtaking HGVs etc.

I get about 20 ish mpg from both the 6 speed D4 and the 8 Speed D4 we have.

I do tend to drive on the gentle side of things usually, just giving it a clear out every now and then. My RoadTrip info is, average 25.52, best 34.4, worst 15.0, over 20,906 miles.

With 20k miles, it will just be starting to yield it's full potential. I have had countless new Discos (every three years or so since the "J" reg!) and the change in performance and smoothness becomes very apparent after 15k to 20k miles.

Also, the 8 speed box is far nicer than the 6 speed box Smile

You won't look back, except to keep checking that your caravan is still hitched!

get a nice test drive...keep up the warranty and you will enjoy it....it weighs 2.6 tons so don't expect 60 per gallon
if you really want to see what it does get half a day at landrover experience...

I thought £950 was lots of money to extend the warranty to 4 years but in hind sight it would have been a bargain. The d4 tows 3500 kg with ease so a tin tent no problem.

decision was made last week; a friends' dad has just bought a new D4 - nice - which meant his well-looked after D3 XS manual was up for sale. Picked it up at a good price, so couldn't say no... so Merc stays, and Disco for dad to run around the fields with and me to tow me 'van.

thanks for all comments & looking forward to towing with her next month Smile

yeah i know, but i just couldn't say no for the money involved; it's an 09, and an 10 xs auto D4 would have sent me back twice as much, and for my 1st steps into LR ownership, thought this was the best thing to do (plus dad can use it for shooting etc and if he dink's it, i won't be "as" bothered!)

a remap would bring the power up to around the same as a D4 for not a lot of money and it makes a huge difference Whistle Whistle

Well it's a start Thumbs Up

The manual gearing is a bit off imho, so you may find your better off switching t po low ratio when manoeuvring the 'van. Otherwise a possible risk of wearing the compute excessively.

You'll love it, but you'd love the auto more. Thumbs Up maybe next time.

When moving the van especially reversing etc use low range it will put far less stress on the clutch as others have said. If you got the manual at such a good price why not sell on or PX for a auto and make a bit on it also jump into an auto better for towing
