Tyre and Rim combination for off road in South Africa. |
|
I need some help with this topic.
My view is to get a second set of rims to put off-road tyres on. I travel about 3k a month open road and the evry 6 to 8 weeks go to the bush or on a weekend trail. I am planning Namibia and Bots for this year or early next year.
What is the suggestion on:
17†or 18†? I believe 18†tyres are not easy to come by.
And then what tyre
I don’t think the tyre or the rim is going to last if I swap tyres every second month. Thus I started to enquire cost of rims.
I did some homework and found that a 18†60 and a 17†65 has the same radius thus gearing and clearance is not affected.
Before you read any further: sit down, light a smoke, get a drink and a paper bag.
LR Waterford quoted per rim with 5% to 8% discount if I take 6 rims
17†R 8 404.00 inc Vat per rim
18†R 5 766.93 inc Vat per rim[b]
Yip I had the above then grabbed for the paper bag to control the hyperventilation.
I then phoned BMW it seems as if the X5 rim will fit and it has the same load rating. R 3240.00 per 17†rim.?

Land Rover has some sort of a special going. 5 x 19†alloy rims and tyres for a bit more than R25,000 + VAT. Don’t know if the tyres are any good, but at that price it seems a bargain. The tyres are 255/55 R19 Good Year MT/R’s – they will definitely be better off-road than the standard 20†low profiles of the RRS S/C. With the Brembo brakes, the smallest rim one can fit is a 19â€. They tyres are quite noisy, but look real macho and as a bonus, I now have a proper spare wheel. I will only be using then when I plan to go off-road. They are currently on the RR and if I remember, I’ll post some pics.

What is your view on Coopers?
The price you quoted was for 4 rims did you not get 5 or 6 rims for the 1 or 2 spare? White LR3 TDV6 2007

I've got Cooper STT on my defender and they suck compared to BFG - buuuut the ones I saw on Baben's car look much better (newer model) .
My biggest issue with them was that they don't self clean well in thick mid

Howzit Heine,
You say "But next time I will probably go for BFG AT ".
Are these available in SA now ? are they the standard 265/60/18 size ?
I had BFG's on my Disco2, and on my 90 before that, they really are excellent.
I just wasn't aware that you could get something for the D3 ?
Cheers
