WHen the car id at rest in N or P and I press the footbrake, there is a single click from the gear lever. Doesn't happen in D or R. Seems recetn. Is this a sign of impending doom or did I just not notice before?

When in N or P you can't move the gear selector unless you press the brake pedal. The click is the sound of the device which releases the mechanism allowing you to move it forward or backwards.
