I spoke to my local Ford dealer to get a price on the Mercon SP ($31 a litre) but they said that Mercon SP is not suitable the gearbox - they use Mercon LV.

The plot thickens - might wait for the next Repco sale and just buy LG6 for about $32 a litre.

That's interesting too, but seeing as some oil companies seem to be supporting this box up until a point, then denying they ever did and deleting any reference to the fact that they did, perhaps something is happening long term or to the way some 6hp's adapt to the oil and various driving styles.

Think I'll stick to LG6 for a bit longer... Whistle

The Landrover oil for the gearbox is Shell M13754 spec grade oil which LG6 meets.

I wonder what other oils actually meet this spec - hmm maybe a Shell oil but certainly not freely available.

ASP 15 is the item - seems my Ford dealer has been putting the wrong fluid in the Territorys as this does list the SP not LV.

Considering the number of Falcons and Territories getting around with the 6HP it could be that Ford Aust has made an enormous mistake on the oil spec...

I wouldn't be surprised if Shell actually makes LG6 itself for ZF. It's not like ZF are going to bother with their own oil refinery, cracking plant, etc. They would create a specification and then tender it out to the oil companies.

Shell then sell it under their own label but also on-sell it to ZF, LR, Ford, BMW, Audi/VW, even Hyundai use this box in some of their more expensive models. That's my theory anyway Whistle I've bought 3 different types of this trans oil now and they've all had identical physical characteristics.

You're right about that!! Shocked Doesn't help that Ford is now spreading the wrong information!

Don't think so; I believe that the 6R80 six-speed Ford transmission was used in the Territory.

Would have been good if Ford had gone with the ZFHP26 but I believe cost had a major sway in the final choice. Ford got the 2.7 TDV6 at the end of it's model run so its price must have been very attractive also consider that Ford assembled the original engines and had input into the design leading up to 2004 when it first appeared in the D3.

* first ran a bearing (design failure in original engine)
* second had a failure of the water outlet on top of the engine (pls check yours)

The Ford 6R80 is a ZF6HP gearbox made by Ford under licence from ZF - the same gearbox but the Ford box is not made to the same tolerances and quality of the ZF product. (or so according to my local auto guy who does work for local dealerships on both boxes.

I originally thought it would've been a 6R too, but when I specced up a new Territory three years ago the Ford website specifically said it's a ZF 6HP transmission. Besides that, the 6HP already has all the programming to go with the 2.7 tdv6 - I can't see Ford rewriting the software to work with the 6R, which may not use the expensive carbon clutches etc that the 6HP26 does and may need its own programming.

Ford builds all the TDV6 and TDV8 engines used in Jag, Ford, LR, PSA cars in Dagenham UK. Ford Aust doesn't have the plant to manufacture compacted graphite iron cylinder blocks.

Penrite made an interesting note about the oil they used to approve for the ZF boxes. Basically they dropped it as a result of not being able to acquire the correct additive pack. I would say there is either some patents or other intellectual property issue limiting the availability to other oil blenders

Well at least Penrite had the courage to come out and say their oil was not suitable and explain why. I am sure other manufacturers would continue to flog it off.

Lifeguard 6 is actually Shell Oil - blended to ZF specs.

Well we ended up buying 2 containers of Nulon's full synthetic ATF yesterday for servicing the 5HP19 trans in my brother's Audi Allroad. If you see the photo below they are clearly still listing "Lifeguard 6" on the containers. The container is dated october 2015. I'd like to use the Nulon ATF in mine but can't do it if Nulon isn't prepared to at least get clear on the spec...

Yes it would be nice to be able to use it but given the amount of conflicting information it is just too risky. I have got to get my cam belt done so I might just give the indy my ZF metal sump and get them to do the flush.

Hi Guys, I see this post and i thought I'd give my experience. I'm running Fuchs 4134 with no issues. Fuchs is readily available. About $290 NZ for a 20ltr. I also flushed mine using the radiator cooling system.
