Tailgate Gas Strut Fell Off

My tailgate gas strut has fallen off. The nut inside the rhs rear pillar has fallen down inside the rear quarter panel somewhere and I cannot see how to get access to it or to hold it in place when screwing in the post that the strut attaches to.

I have seen a reference to this problem somewhere but am not able to find the article, a search on gas strut or tailgate failed to bring the info up.

I remember some drastic action being taken by some dealers to repair the problem and don’t want to go down that track.
