| rear number plate removal |
|
my new cars rear plate is stuck on and i want to swap my own plate on but its solidly fixed ( original factory fitted plate )
any one got any good tips on removal of the rear plate
dont want to damage the rear panel so wondered if anyone in the bodyshop field has any good tips
was thinking warming it up with the old hair dryer trick but open to suggestions

A bit of fishing line (or similar non-abrasive cord) and a sawing action down the back of the plate should start it off. Help it with a bit of petrol or meths to break up the sticky stuff. Never take life too seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.

did mine recently - twice actually since I put my new plate on wonky and had to redo it. 
Firstly. Clean around the area then use some masking tape to mark the position of the current plate (I missed this step first time around to my cost)
I heated mine with a hair-drier for a minute or so then used dental floss to cut through the sticky pads that are holding it in place. Keep the floss taught and don't let it catch on the edge of the plate or it will snap. Take your time and it will come off no bother and certainly should not damage the paint. Leave a nice minty smell too 
You'll then be left with the remains of the pads which can take some removal. WD40 will shift it, or if you have it autoglym tar remover works brilliantly. Again take your time and it will come off.
Stick on the new plates using 1mm pads. I recommend using quite a few as they do come off over time.
Make sure you get it straight and centred... it's a  when you get it wrong and have to do again. Also Gone : MY14 D4 SDV6 HSE : Barolo Black + Almond

thanks guys great advice as ever
will be screw fixing the new one on as it already has screw holes and fixing caps on the doner car
and it wont be wonky and it will definitely be a square one

I've just replaced my plate having transferred the private plate off. I just heated the plate with a hairdryer before gently applying pressure to each corner one at a time until it came away. I then pressure washed the area from about 12" away to remove the sticky tab residue before drying the area and polishing it. I then cleansed the area where the plate was going with an alcohol wipe before putting the new plate on using some fresh stickers. I just centralised it using the door handle and used the Discovery wording to make sure it wasn't cockeyed.
