Carputer project

Anyone tried to do a car computer ("Carputer") in their D3 yet?

The nice gap for the satnav would be a perfect location for some of the gubbins which are normally hard to install neatly.

Just a thought- I like the idea of a carputer to be able to do all sorts of fancy stuff like satnav, mp3 database, dvd control etc. You #could# have a wireless internet connection, so you could update the mp3 and film library whilst your car sits in your drive / garage. Lots of possibilities.

At the moment, it may be one for those with deeper pockets, much more time and rather higher technical competence, I fear.

I've seen on some of the recent satnav threads that the TomTom unit sits nicely in the central dash recess.

It looks like a neat idea in theory, but to me seems a little like the HTPC ("home theatre PC") concept, where you set up a PC to act as video recorder, tv playback, pausing live tv etc. Nice but a big effort to work easily and pass the 'technophobe wife' test for usability.

Ah but some of us are allergic to apples.

I presume the Mac mini has to be installed in the glove compartment and just the screen in the dash recess though? I guess the box is a little too big to fit behind the touch screen

Car PC

I did install a PC & Touch screen in my old disco, wrote all the software myself, intregated with mappoint, had mp3's videos and sat nav all in a simple package, problems came with needing another battery and draining too much power from that as well. So bought a D3 SE and love it, put my MP3s onto 6 CDs (150 per disk) now all we all need to sort out is unlocking the extra inputs on the front screen so I can watch video from a DVD player (while im waiting in traffic... obviously)

Unfortunately the base stereo doesn't recognise mp3s, so you can only get 15-20 tracks on one CD in the machine.

A bit short-sighted of LR in my opinion.

That sucks, I was actually quite surprised when it read the MP3 disk, it also seems to do WMA's as well.... but as you say if the base model does not play them, that is a bit shortsighted by LR. It may be a last min addin, as I cannot see anything in the manuals about even being able to play MP3's anyway!

As far as I can recall, the manual makes vague mention of mp3 compatability, but is pretty vague about the differences between base and premium stereo.

You might want to take a look at this book that's just been published:

It would be extra cool if the Mac ran some of the Ordnance Survey map packages that exist, but I think they are all Windows-based Big Cry

Unless Simon knows better...

Came over from rrsport.co.uk.

Nice to see some people are interested in Carputers. Posted on rrsport.co.uk and no one seemed that interested.

You should look at www.mp3car.com. Mainly US based posters but some UK/Europe installers. Though they prefer the DIY approach!
