Have looked through many of the suggestions for wiring the D3 for the van. Can anyone offer any suggestions for the following?
I have run separate HD wires and auto-setting relays from battery to rear of vehicle for fridge and battery charging.
The van has a 12 pin flat Narva plug. I now need to connect the corresponding 12 pin plug to the vehicle. Am I correct in assuming that I can use the wires from the 'black 7-pin' plug on the back of the D3?
Any help appreciated.
ALSO:
What can be done to rid myself of 18" alloys in order to get 17" suitable for offroad tyres - Cooper ST or similar.
Someone want to swap???? Kaymar rear bar and tyre carrier; Safari Snorkel: ARB under-bonnet compressor; LRA fuel tank; Winch, bullbar; Cibie Super Oscars; Rhino Platform Roof Rack, Reversing camera; Traxide auxiliary battery system, 17" rims - Cooper ST.

Hi Will,
I bought an adapter to change from large 7 pin plug to flat socket. I think it is a utilux brand.
Regarding the tyres... Nobody wants to swap! I already tried that one a while ago.
It seems there are 4 options for those of us with 18" alloys wanting AT tyres:
1) Wait until Dynamic Tyres get their act together and order more supply of General Grabber AT2 into the country. They only bought in 180 tyres and they are sold out.
2) Wait until Yokohama release the 265/60R18 Geolandar AT/S - "later in 2007."
3) Change to 17" aftermarket alloys - there never seems to be any standard alloys for sale on eBay or anywhere else.
4) Change to 17" steel wheels from Dynamic Tyres.
There should be some V8 D3 owners wanting to downgrade to 18" wheels out there.
I did see a comment about fitment problems with the steel wheels. Does anyone know if these issues have been addressed?
FWIW, the Mickey Thompson rep that CaverD3 and myself spoke to last Sunday (at the LR Expo), said that they will have an ATZ Special in 265/60R18 in early 2008. I will be due for new tyres well before then.

I am in the same boat with the 12 pin plug and really dont want to have 2 Anderson plugs which seems to be option 1 with the auto electrician. I did read some where that the white plug could be used. I guess the trouble will be sourcing the white trailer plug.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will look at cutting the wires at a suitable location, adding the necessary extension and connecting the 12 pin plug.
Like many others I think I will wait for new tyres to become available.

Hi Will, are you planning on just powering some accessories in the van or are you going to be charging a battery in the van.
If your just powering some accessories then the 12 pin plug will do the job.
On the other hand, if you are planning to charge a battery while your driving then you are far better off using 50 amp Anderson plugs.
These are designed to not only carry the higher currents that will be needed to charge the battery ( and run accessories at the same time ) they are also designed to tolerate connect and disconnect operations while high current loads are applied.
This is something that trailer plugs can not take too often before they are damaged.

Hi Drivesafe,
The two separate cables power the fridge, a larger than normal unit and recharge the battery when necessary. I do have solar to assist and everything is charged via a 'smart charger', which came with the van. All other van accessories are 12v.

I have a new camper trailer ordered and it comes with a round plug. If I connect (as normal) to the black round connector on the car, does anyone know the voltage output available from the plug on the car, from the charging wire through to charge my camper batteries? If it sends enough volts through, this will eliminate usage of an Anderson plug. 2006 HSE TDV6 Bonatti Grey, ECB bull bar, tropical roof, LG Next G car kit, Tom Tom GPS, UHF, Mitchell Bros tow bar, Kimberley Kamper Limited Edition camper trailer and 23 foot Haines Signature half cabin (Towed separately!)

Hi PBob,
Whilst you can do that, you will get too much voltage drop on normal vehicle wiring to get your camper trailer batteries fully charged. There is a great book called 'Motor Home & Camper Trailer Electrics' available, written by Colyn Rivers (or simialar). I absolutley recommend it to anyone playing around with wiring for camper trailers as it will tell you all you need to know and then some. I followed his instruction s with wiring size to install an Anderson plug on my Pajero and it has been very successful. It would seem that most installations tend to use wiring gauges that are far too small for the current draw and result in insufficient voltage across the battery. I can go back to my book when I get a chance and give you all the figures, but I'd recommend you buy one - they're not that expensive.

Just a warning when using the rear plugs, their brass and not designed for high current use such as charging a battery in a caravan or camper trailer plus the cable is nowhere near thick enough to be able to carry any decent currents without suffering some serious voltage drop.

errr.... the UK 'S' socket has a designated connection for just that purpose.... not seen any tin tent wiring go into meltdown because the aux battery was being charged, that said, corroded socket or plug connections will lead to volt drop and heat build up

Hi 10forcash, I’d power a fridge or some lights via these plugs and although you could charge a battery, it would take forever to get a battery charged anywhere fully charge and then only after a fairly long drive time.
