Autocar Cover Story 23-12-15

As per title. A couple of "Autocar" images, which I expect will be reasonably accurate and a lot of quotes from LR Design Director Gerry McGovern. "on sale late next year".

No mention of the tailgate and I can't really tell from the "image" of the rear if it's split or not.

Much talk of "class leading off-road ability". Thumbs Up

"deliberately closer to Range Rover" and "There will be a premium execution in Discovery, more Range Rover-like. But we need to not confuse and get the balance right". Sad

"The new Defender family due around 2017" will be the one I'll be most eagerly awaiting.

Think a lot of us are pinning their hopes on the Defender line up as the D5 is going to be very 'high-end'

The D5 will not be as utilitarian as we have come to expect. And it will move the prices deliberately closer to Range Rover Big Cry

Perhaps they need to remind themselves of why they brought out the Discovery in the first place. I just think they're losing the plot; how is making their cars all more similar going to help them sell more? If people wanted a ruddy Range Rover they'd buy one! Someone's just trying too hard. Rolling Eyes

I just hope the new Defender doesn't look like the DC100, because I think it looked like some downmarket, tacky, cheesy, Chinese knock-off of a vehicle... It may have resembled the shape of a Defender, but the styling was quite the opposite.

I think it's a real shame to push it upmarket and is greedy of JLR too. They are obviously targeting the emerging afluent overseas markets but they already have the Range Rover stable, surely they could make a 7 seat version of the FFRR as the wheelbase is big enough.

Why not keep Discovery close to it's market 'as is'?? Perhaps it's the only way to justify an entirely new 'Defender' line-up which needs to sell lots of units to be viable.

Really hope they make good cars at the lower end too as there are surely a lot of customers that want a decent product in the £20-£30k price band (look how many German/Japanese/Korean soft roaders fit into that bracket and sell in droves)

According to the article LR are looking at bringing a smaller disco (smaller than the sport) to compete against these suv's

Wasn't the original idea of the Discovery to be an affordable family car, a Land Rover for us mortals who couldn't afford a Range Rover.

I found a brochure from 2007 and the entry level 5 seater (manual) was IIRC £27.5k and the range topping HSE was just over £44k (standard auto gearbox). My entry level SE was just over £42k inc options.

Personally, I think the Discovery is already upmarket enough, as whilst I like all the toys and gadgets, even I feel the current Discovery has everything you really need.

This month's LRO magazine mentions the D5 is likely to cost an extra £7 or 8,000. Rolling Eyes

They mentioned it was due to the switch to the aluminium platform.

We may not be able to afford them but my god they are awesome off-road, just spent the morning in the very latest version of the Range Rover Sport at LRE Honiton and I was mightily impressed with the improvements. From the mouth of the LRE guy the D5 is a bigger version of the RRS. I guess JLR are ultimately targeting the luxury market as that is where the money is, it sucks that it will rule me out. New defender here I come Thumbs Up

Lifestyle - Discovery
Dual purpose - Defender

Seems to have all gone done the drain.

Once the Discovery 8 is out I might just about get into a 5 Laughing

Lifestyle doesn't suggest a price bracket, just that it is a practical vehicle. LR is a company and its sole purpose in life is to make money they are going to produce cars that make them the most money, not what the LR enthusiasts want as most of them don't buy new anyway. A bigger RRS sounds great, I don't know if I'll be able to afford it we'll cross that bridge when we are there.
