What would you do?

After 6 months of waiting my car finally arrived today - 2 months late.

When I inspected the car it clearly looked used, but the dealer insisted it was new. On closer inspection I noticed scratches over the centre console, dash fasica around radio, buttons on centre console and both front seats. The dealer blamed the wharfies and apologised, however it did not make sense so I continued looking. I found broken glass under the seat which was initially dismissed as walked in, until I pointed out a whole load more at which point he finally recognised we had a problem. Then we tried to shut the tailgate and it would not close making it undriveable. The tailgate support cord also would not rewind.

Obviously I refused the car in this state and the dealer took it back to have the issues rectified (after taping the tailgate closed). I received a call from the dealer (after I chased up) and was told they were resolving the issues and that the keys had in fact been looked in the car (unknown to them) and the docks had broken the window to open the car. (I am not sure if I believe this from LR Australia given other stories told to date about the delays on the car)

The dealer is talking about compensation, but I just want the car I ordered in new condition not taken apart with all the console, facia and front seats changed. I am concerned that if they do try and resolve it I will have other issues down the track with rattles, poor fit etc etc. Has anyone had similar experiences or recommendations as I am keen to get driving the car, but don't want a lemon.

By the way I have an active rear diff and therefore I would either have to have a stock car without or have a new build and wait another 5 months.

Thanks

James

firstly ask the dealer for a D3 loaner for the interim while all issues are fixed to your satisfaction. also you would like some boltons and/or free servicing for the added inconvenience and the dealers obvious attempt to deceive you (someone had to fix the window, probably them). many here have stripped their D3's with no further rattles, so replacing these items should not be an issue. also check that you actually have the rear e-diff.
how many km's were on it BTW.

My sympathies, James, as mentioned by CW, check the mileage and the compliance and build plates of the car. The manufacturer build plate is on top of the grill next to the bonnet latching mechanism and should indicate the date of manufacture. The compliance plate is on the driver's side B-pillar - the date on it should not be more than 6months.

Bear in mind the fact that the mileage can be reset several times as long as it doesn't exceed 100 miles (not sure what happens in a km vehicle).

I'd expect odometer reading to show less than 20km. Mine had 13km on it when I picked it up.

Also I would expect that the build date (find this on the radiator support panel) should only be within a few months of this month (say 2-3 months).

If you had seen it before it was delivered then all of the interior (seats, door trims) are covered in plastic. When you went to pick it up how could they have missed the tailgate problem during pre-delivery - the service centre looks pretty average.

Hope this turns out okay for you in the end.

Thanks

The car is definately a 2008 MY car as it has the new interior so build date and compliance should not be an issue. My concern is what else was damaged and are the repairs ever going to be to the same standard as the factory.

If they broke a window to get in then I'm sure that is 100% repairable. It would be good to know which one it was for future reference particularly if they have been able to remove all of the glass fragments from inside the door - you don't want glass rattling around in the door. It still worrying that such obvious scratches and malfunctioning tailgate have been overlooked and doesn't reflect on the Dealer's ability to do a good job. I'd say that the Dealer needs to ensure that all repairs are done to perfection and I'm sure they can do it if they put their mind to it.

Also push to get a D3 loaner as some minor compensation while you have to wait to get the new ride.

Let us know how you go and get some pics up when you finally take delivery.

Hi DiscoJames - sorry to hear about that news.

I would approach the dealer principal and ask for all the damaged parts to be replaced - including scratched surfaces, as well as a refund of the dealer delivery cost. A mention of the Dept of Fair Trading wouldn't hurt either.

I wonder why dealers get a bad reputation? (Not!)

Cheers,
Rob

Discojames - what a complete Censored , for you - and what a complete Censored , the dealer is - what sort of "dealer delivery" allowed that through!

All the best with sortiung it out - and yes - I'd be going the route of a D3 or RRS loaner while a new or this one (repaired to your satisfaction (get an independent check done)) is delivered. And yes - no dealer delivery charges to apply...

Do you need us to write a letter?

Neutral

Very frustrating for you!

The dealer is trying their best and seem genuinely apologetic. When my car did not initially turn up due to a logistics / system error 1 month ago (it was already 1 month late) they arranged a loan car from Land Rover Australia - so I am already using Land Rovers Australia courtesy car. This was arranged by the dealer to its credit.

The dealer insists that Land Rover did not notify it about the damage and that the issue with their dealer delivery checks has now been dealt with. Land Rover insist that it was them that broke into the car at the docks - not a thief (a thief probably would have done a better job - so it may be true).

The dealer to their credit has now managed to negotiate the 2 options on my behalf

either replace for a new car - but without the active rear diff delivered in 4 weeks time or my car fixed to perfection (if I can believe that) + steering wheel controls, ipod kit, cargo net and paint / leather protection.

Both offers seem reasonable and so except for their lousy PDI I can not fault their commitment to customer satisfaction. They have answered all my calls and responded in a reasonable timeframe so I have to give them some credit despite being disappointed. I guess mistakes happen (a lot in this case) but it is how you deal with them that counts and the offers seem fair.

They have also offered the replacement with a black Disco 3 immediately with rear aircon and sunroof, but I expect they will want something extra for that as the options are worth 4k over and above my car.

So I guess I have to make a decision - repaired car with the extras or new car without extras and without active rear diff.

sorry discjames
did not read properly Embarassed

The rear diff is a must have Very Happy and they are not offering a replacement with it?
if fixed to perfection and you are happy with the result since they are giving the extra goodies as well maybe the better way to go.
rejecting will meen along wait for one with active diff. Sad

Discojames,

I'm with the others, make sure yours is properly repaired and grab the extra goodies. Steering wheel controls are just so useful. The rear diff can never be retrofited so if you ordered it then you will kick yourself to give it up for another D3 sitting around at a dealers which might not even be a 2008 model.

Your profile says you ordered a silver then why even think about a black one? Black with glass sun roofs - it's going to be a hot house in there Censored and you'll melt.

Thanks,

I have taken everyones advice and gone for the repairs + goodies. I even got them to swap the paint protection for roof rails and roof bars.

I get to keep the courtesy car for the next 2 weeks while mine is being fixed. The dealer is even coming over to service it as it is in need of its 12k service and I am taking it to Brisbane next week - I guess it will save me 2.5k on my car.

Can't wait until I get my own though!

Good choice, DJ. FYI, some lowlife broke into my drivers window. Obriens vacuumed it out very carefully, I have had no problems at all. See you out on the road, maybe at a RR(NSW) club drive
