I discovered a quirky thing the other day. I bought a iPhone 6 and used Google Maps to try the navigation feature. When the Google voice commands came on, it activated the car's phone feature. It lifts the handset, speaks through the car's audio system, and then disconnects.
I thought it to be a sleazy Apple trick at the time, your phone calling your car and using airtime, but having had a re-think about it, it's probably not the case.
Having been so frustrated with the sat nav in my car and lack of updated maps, I only use Google Maps. It's route updates simply cannot be beaten by the system providers.
So, the tip is this: Between Apple, Google and an unintended LR feature, my LR3 is a state of the art navigator.
*notes
- searched for sat nav map upgrades
- hoped for Carplay compatibility
- read a post on the MY16 sat nav system
- might have been a bug in the iOS '09 LR3 4.4 HSE Zermatt Silver

I've not had cause to try this in my Disco but the missus' Freelander uses AirPlay over Bluetooth to provide spoken route guidance through either Google maps or Apple Maps.

It's just working as designed. You can select what it does via the Navigation Settings in Google Maps settings. 'Play voice over Bluetooth' and optionally, 'Play as Bluetooth phone call'.
Works in all cars that support Bluetooth and with which the phone is paired. Second option is needed if the BT module doesn't support BT media. ____

Hi.Jack wrote:Is it then not possible to play music etc the same way? Yes as long as the Bluetooth module in your car supports it. The older BT modules in the D3/LR3 (including yours) did not but later ones do. Wiggs offers an exchange programme to get an upgraded Bluetooth module, you could PM him for costs etc. Not sure if he covers the US region though... ____

Wiggs, I can send you mine first, and then get the modified version back. Via DHL from here would be GBP60, and probably 30 back via DHL. Also I cannot ask as buddy to take such a device back to the UK, as you can guess, it might cause alarm at check-in.
For the meantime, I will just plug the AUX cable for the music part of it.
Thanks anyway. '09 LR3 4.4 HSE Zermatt Silver
