Blue smoke when starting from cold |
|
Hi folks
I have been getting this over the winter and it seems to be getting worse. It's only when starting in the morning after a cold night and is fine after it warms up. Any suggestions?
Cheers

Sure its blue smoke? - cold starts could mean glow plug issues with unburnt fuel (grey smoke)
Lumpy start?
If you try a double start cycle (i.e. wait until all lights go out, turn off and start process again) does it make any difference?
Someone more knowledgeable than me will be along soon

how many miles or K's or your D3 or D4 ?
is it used regularly ?
how long have you had it ?
is it serviced....?
have you got any service records ?
if you drive lots of miles - does the engine use much oil.....?
whats the full consumption like..?
does it otherwise drive OK..? BREXIT - done properly.

Thanks for the replies.
It's defo blue smoke and no probs starting or running.
It's a fully serviced D3 with 113k miles (55 plate), used most days since getting about three years ago. I have to admit I haven't checked the oil since November service but never had to top up before.

So it seems it's only when cold starting as it's been fine since the weather has become milder. There doesn't seem to be any significant oil use and performance is good.
I have been doing the start procedure twice over; I don't know if this has helped.
I forgot to mention that I have had the EGRs blanked two years ago.
It worth using any of the fuel additives (Redex, ect.) or anything else.
Cheers

If your going to use any fuel additive I'd be using Forte Advanced Formula Diesel Treatment.

Does "whenever" refer to:
1) whenever if it works....properly
2) whenever it decides to display the data you need...after a wait....til it decices to
Dipsticks....instant reading without waiting...accurate....nothing to fail except failing to use it...

So, back to the original point. There is a lot of blue smoke on starting after a cold night but it goes away quickly and there is no problem with performance, significant oil usage or any other issues.
From what I've read and been told, it seems that very cold weather is allowing a small amount of oil in through the seals and this is being burned off when starting(?).
Bearing in mind I am no mechanic and wouldn't dream of taking the engine apart, what would I be looking at to have a garage fix it? Or does anyone know of a quick fix?
Cheers

I would guess it is the turbo oil seal, they get hot very quickly, the heat expansion may be helping to make the seal do its job. Take the turbo pipe off (the one that splits) at the bottom and see how much oil comes out. Better still take the pipe off at night, let it drain over night and start up with the pipe disconnected to see if it still smokes. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
