New to me - Discovery 4 - 2012
After the shock demise of our trusted Discovery 2 (chassis rot) that was supposed to last us another couple of years, we had to do a rushed search of newer models.
The first couple we saw in dealerships (non LR) were high mileage unloved examples. Despite being on the forecourt they were filthy with no prep-work done.
The third was found unloved at the back of a LR dealership compound and was nearly immaculate inside and out.
Deposit down awaiting prep, with nothing else looking like a better deal/offer we picked it up last Thursday.
Took the caravan away on Friday with the first warning light and reduced performance notice later that evening!
Managed to get home with 3 further warning lights, all cleared after stopping and re-starting so fingers crossed its nothing major. Getting it booked in with LR at the moment.
A nicely specced car, pretty close to my ideal so happy days;
2012 - HSE
Fridge
HD Tow pack
Surround cameras
E-Diff
19" wheels inc full size rear
sapphire silver - nice blue tinted silver.
As well as the warning light a few issues to sort;
Failed LED's in the rear tail lights.
Crap touch up job to stone chipped bonnet by the dealer.
Thanks to this site I'm already spending money! Sunglasses holder and tow cover thumbscrews completed.
Plenty more to go!
Pictures to follow later once I've taken some.
Sandy.

Welcome to the spending zone. I’d suggest the next spend is a decent diagnostic widget, it’ll save you a small fortune in dealer costs.
Hate to ask the obvious but you sure you’ve got a locking rear diff? They are as rare as rocking horse poo. Your HSE will have off-road display, that will tell you. Put her in low box and rock crawl mode, it should show unlockedlocked as you move off.

It sounds great (apart from the faults).
If it does have a locking rear diff. I wonder if it belonged to anyone on here. As DSL said, it's a rare option.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

BT IID and spare wheel protector towards the top of the spending list
Take a trip along Houndkirk Moor. It’s tame and non scratchy. You’ll notice the difference between your old D2.

Chassis rot was a shock surprise?
Doesn’t it take a while usually? D3 07 SE - still going strong
D3 07 HSE - gone to car heaven
FL1 - gone to Romania
D3 05 HSE - gone to a divorce diet
D1 V8 manual - gone but not forgotten
RR Classic - gone to car heaven
Jeeps, Lexus, X-trails... Too many to name..

Yeah chassis rot was expected but just not as bad as was found!
Not too bad for some, it’s being patched up and re MOT’d before going to a new home. Took us all the way from the artic circle in the north to Corsica in the south with no major issues. No complaints from me. I just hope the new one lives up to the same expectations!
Wheel protecter in progress.
Diff; having researched and lurked here I’m pretty sure it has. Only messed about with it on the road so far but the rear locking diff graphics is there. Not been under it yet to physically check but it’s misted on vopix thingy ma jig.
The dealer advert was crap with the only extras listed being tow bar, roof rails and tinted windows. I think I got lucky for once. Right place right time. I spotted the cameras when leaving on the first visit that’s what got me searching for full build spec.
Yep, Houndkirk is my local Lane so it’ll be on there very soon. The old disco was used heavily in the snow and light laning. This one will be no different.
Thanks for looking, pics in the light.
Sandy.

I drove a Nissan X trail to Corsica about 12 years ago. What a beautiful place with stunning scenery and amazing lanes...
Should be on every overlander's list..D3 07 SE - still going strong
D3 07 HSE - gone to car heaven
FL1 - gone to Romania
D3 05 HSE - gone to a divorce diet
D1 V8 manual - gone but not forgotten
RR Classic - gone to car heaven
Add a disklok to the shopping list. It's medium size you need..

Or just switch off keyless entry, should work on a MY12. On fob three rapid presses of lights in then lock. Same except lock to re-enable. Simples.

Some photos at last;
Missing leds from the tail light cluster.
A couple of stone chips with shoddy touch ups. Not really sure what to expect but will raise it with the dealer when it goes in.

Oh and it’s Siberian silver not sapphire
A couple more showing the diff lock graphic. Still not stuck my head underneath. And the surround cameras.
I’ve trawled through the bit of history I’ve got and it’s spent the last few years in Anglesey on a private plate. Hopefully not in the sea! If anybody knows it please shout!
Wheel protector has arrived to be fitted tomorrow.
Keys are kept in faraday pouches for now. Still getting used to the tech and the keyless entry is good for me when wrestling a toddler in/out of the car!
I’ve got an old disc lok which I’ll test for size.
Thanks all.

If it’s like the D3 they all have that unlocked padlockon the rear diff, whether it’s an e-diff or standard. Pretty sure the D4 is the same. Try the low box/rock crawl routine to see if it changes to locked on moving off.

E diff lock, surround cameras, silver paint, HSE sounds suspiciously like an ex LR management car, good luck with it and I hope it serves you as well as your last LR It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
