Newbie parking brake will I be ok?

Hi, sorry if this has been covered before!

I'm on vacation in deepest Wales..on the way yesterday I got an error flash up and the disco went into limp mode. I stopped checked and it said parking brake error.. Weird as I was driving at the time.. The parking brake works as it should can hear it engaging and disengaging. The started up ok and I travelled on to my destination ok but with an amber "p" showing on the dash. After a couple of stops and starts the error has gone ?

Should I be ok to get back home before getting it looked at by my local garage?

My main concern was the going into limp mode!

Thanks for advice

I'd check the alternator before further damage can result. Thumbs Up

That's a good shout. I had same error, was a failing alternator. Also changed the battery to be on the safe side. Alternator change took 20 minutes, my Indy came out to me.

It's up to you of course, but do bear in mind the safety implications and potential for further damage. I suggest you disconnect your battery when not in use in case it drains it. Thumbs Up

Hi lost for words are you saying battery will be drained by epb? What if it's not engaged?

It's not the EPB that we suspect - it's the alternator. The EPB fault can be one of the signs of failure if it is overvolting or producing excessive AC. If it's the diodes failing, it can drain the battery. Thumbs Up

Hi

Home safely had a different message pop up on way home (was accellating hard up hill) problem was very quick then disappeared think it said engine something or other! not sure if it went into Limp mode a stopped immediately turned off then back on with no erros on startup! booked into local Indi tomorrow for an alternator/battery test...Also will have a full fault code check.

Thing is not sure what should be done with the codes..seems reading many stories a hell of a lot of the faults are not for real and can be caused by many things not even related....starting to wonder what i've bought seems to be so delecate especially around water!!

Whats the common sensus on codes...do I reset them and wait for the next codes to appear several times Then act on them if they keep appearing?

Thanks James

I suspect the message you got was "Engine System Fault" - under such circumstances the fuel filter would normally be the first place to start (or perhaps turbo hose if there's black smoke), but I don't think it rules out the alternator.

Generally codes should be noted and cleared, then after a suitable drive cycle, checked to see what returns. The D3 isn't really delicate, but it is, in common with many modern vehicles and electronics in general, very sensitive to correct voltage. Thumbs Up

Ukraine

I had similar issues with mine a few months ago, was on the M5 on my way to Wales, managed to call a forum member and he told me to turn around, get home and disconnect battery.

She was 3 days on the drive, before new alternator arrived and swapped out....luckily my battery was not 'goosed' by the failing alternator as we caught it early.

I would also while the battery is disconnected give it a good charge/reconditioning, did this with mine (Using Ctek charger) and have not had any issues since Thumbs Up

I think the common problem appears to be going to Wales, maybe a survey is needed as to whether this is maybe a more common issue than realised, and has not been considered in fault finding.
All the problems seem to occur either on the way, or whilst there, although the car always seems to be happy to make its way home without incident.
