New brakes and pads - now graunching sound

Hi - I recently had V8 brakes fitted all round as we managed to wear the rear pads down to the metal. I was attempting to fit them myself but had issues with jacking height etc. I reluctantly gave it to our local garage to fit as my wife needed them done same day.

They came back fine and worked pretty well. However after a few hundred miles I'm noticing a graunching noise occasionally at around 30mph. I assumed it was the parking brake. I've just done a bedding in of the EPB which went ok. However there is no change to anything.

I got back and used an IR thermometer on the brake disks and noticed the drivers rear was almost twice as hot as the the passenger left. I would therefore assume that calliper was binding but that was the one which was replaced.

Any ideas what could be done here? The job was not particularly cheap, about £269 + VAT for labour only. About £80 for the calliper.

I would suspect that the calipers sliders may be seized /partially seized on the side that is hot .They should of been checked during the repair though .
 You're not afraid of the dark are you ?

If you have a seized calliper, the working calliper on that axle will be hotter as it doing all the work, while the seized one may make a bit of noise, by the nature of it being seized, it won't actually be doing the braking. Once you follow that logic it all becomes clear Thumbs Up

Sorry CDS I have to disagree with you there, in my experience it is the seized caliper that gets hot as the hydraulic pressure is sufficient to move the piston and press the pad against the disc but there is sufficient resistance to prevent the pad releasing back off the disc when the hydraulic pressure is released.

It may be that it is a faulty new caliper but I would suspect that Cellerdweller has hit the nail on the head and the garage have reused the original slide pins without cleaning and lubricating them properly.
