D3 rear diff
Hello everyone. Had my d3 a few days, it's so nice.
Again the site has had all the info I need
Just something I was reading before I got the d3. It was about the rear locking diff being an added extra option. Is that correct?
This is how my 4x4 screen looks with the centre and rear lock displayed, so does this mean I have it fitted or is that a standard display.

Hi Cuttus,
mine has the rear locking diff and it shows the same image.
On special programs like rock and crawl it locks automatically showing the rear diff locked on an orange background and she goes smooth as silk everywhere

Thanks for that, that sounds promising.
That gonna come in really handy, as I do a lot of farm/field work. Unfortunately I'm on road tyres, we'll all weather ones. I'm 90%road and 10% mud, just usually it's pretty heavy going once I am off road.
You have to see it lock to mean you have the rear E-diff. Easy to take a quick look underneath and see if it has the motor and electric gubbins there though. Ah thanks for that, so the lock symbol could still be there even if the rear diff is not fitted?

Oh that's a shame, I was getting excited about it. I guess I better go outside and have a look.
Oh actually I guess if it put it in rock craw setting both should lock and light up orange if I have the rear???
If you have the "optional" electronic rear diff fitted, it only activates when the cars brain tells it to. It is not permanently on. My D3 SE has the electronic rear diff and it only comes on for a split second or so in most situations. If the cars brain tells it not to deploy the locking rear diff it will not. Only time it has been on longer has been in deep mud, or the occasional iced track.

Thanks for that MELISCAT. I did think it only comes on when needed but I wasn't sure if they both lock when put in "rock craw".
Well I'm out in the fields Thursday so I'll have a play around and see what come up on the 4x4 screen.

Or you could look under and see if you can see an actuator.

Hi Everyone,
I am really pleased with my D3 and I have enjoyed the information and advice that the Forum provides. Everyone raves about the off-road capabilities of the D3 and I had no reason to doubt it.
However, I have a brief tale to tell that I would like some views on. Earlier this year, we had a significant snow fall and I was travelling down a narrow road quite happily when a vehicle coming the other way caused me to move too far to the left and partially into a ditch. The nearside rear wheel was in the ditch and whatever I did, it was just spinning. None of the other wheels were and I would have expected with the diff system and 4WD that power would be transferred to at least some of the other 3 wheels to get me out, but sadly not and I had to be pulled out by a tractor!
What was going on here and/or what did I do wrong?
If both rear wheels had traction, it should have got torque to them by locking the centre diff, otherwise traction control should also be able to brake the spinning wheel and get the others moving. Selecting Rock Crawl will lock the centre diff up. Hard to judge, but it sounds like it ought to have managed. Yes, makes sense - that's what I thought as well. Thanks for your reply. I will check the rack crawl function with the display to check it does lock.
Any other checks I can try without going to the dealer? It is actually still under warranty...

Hard to say without observing what happened but as with all LR traction control systems you have to give them chance to work, holding the throttle steady as a wheel begins to spin (rather than backing off too quickly as many often do) will allow the system to brake the spinning wheel and even up resistance across the diffs, combined with progressively 'locking' the centre e-diff it will transfer power to the other wheels that have grip. It's not instant though, you have to hold it for a fair few seconds at times.
If you were in deep snow with the weight shifted to one side I suspect you had little if any grip at any corner and thus would have struggled to progress but you would expect to see the other wheels turning at times and trying to bite.
Only real way to test is to get your car off-road and deliberately into a cross axle situation and then see what the TC system does.2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto
