Green Lanes near Carlisle?

Hi All,

I'm going for a weekend away to around Carlisle next weekend. I'm keen to try a bit of green laning as we don't have that pleasure up in Scotland! I wondered if anybody could recommend any family friendly lanes around and about the Carlisle area that I could venture on in a D3? Bit of adventure would be good but nothing too treacherous as we'll be alone in our one vehicle.

Any insights much appreciated! Thumbs Up

Thanks,

Chris

And don't go anywhere near the old coach road. There are a few topics at the top of this section from our previous trips with route details, if you need any help give me a shout. Thumbs Up

Gaz,
The old coach road has been really badly washed out, so much so that Dave T in an off road modified defender, decided that it was too risky. And for Dave to do that, means it is bad.

Wow thats not good, its one of the very few lanes in the lakes that I've not driven yet. I wonder if its repairable, I may need to fit it into a walk some day and have a look.

I'm sure they will repair it, but there is a gully around 3 ft deep down one section that you just couldn't straddle and you would need to cross. Some have tried to pass off piste but even that would be risky and difficult and of course definitely off limits. It would also be difficult to do a recovery without going off piste.

There are pictures on a Facebook page, "Lake District 4x4 tours", I don't think they are showing the worst bit!

Hopefully they will repair the OCR but the council are rather busy rebuilding lots of A & B roads still after the floods of December Sad

Is it worth contacting local council to do similar as the National Trust did to raise cash for the repairs to Tilberthwaite. Get it on all the forums again, I'm sure all of us would be happy to donate.

Anyone any contacts in the area?
