When the winch turns up from new its coiled onto the drum under 'no-load' what you have to do with your new winch is, un-spool the cable and then 'winch-in' with a load on the cable. This ensures that the cable is wound fooking tight on the drum If you don't do this and spool some cable out lets say 1/3rd OK So when the 1/3 thats spooled out, will under load, destroy the layers below it as those layers are not tightly bound together. In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Oh, is that what 10forcash meant? I remember now, when he'd finidhed fitting everyting, Iain told me that the cable needed to be re-wound under load.
In one ear, out the other
So how would you do this then? Presumably you need to put the car on a slight slope and drag it up? There must be a bit of an art to this, to neatly wind in the cable under load?

Hate to say it ................it tells you in the user leaflet you get with the winch
Any chance of the more experienced winchers giving some tips at Tong???????? or winch training day?? I speak as a novice wincher and would prefer to use this dangerous tool with a bit more technical knowledge.......I'm a Yorkshire man and £500 for two days at LRE is a bit expensive when there's a wealth of experience within the forum
PS I'll be double checking I've pre loaded mine before Tong TONGA GREEN G4 bits and of course DVD for the kids!

Yes there is
You need to load the cable to the max idealy Then whatever load that 'you', place on the winch cable after this, will not destroy the 'softer wound' layers underneath In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

There were several winch training days organised this year, but due to circumstance they were all cancelled.
I'm sure they will be back on after Morocco in October.....

Ken used my motor as a pre-loading mechanism by reeling his cable out and then slowly towing me towards him on flat ground. he then used a hammer to apply additional side tension on the cable close to the drum so that the cable was tight on the horizontal as it wound in 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Yes it's pi poor that you spend so much on a bit of kit and you don't get as much as enough paper to wipe your ar with.............it could've been me in your shoes, I just didn't have the chance to use mine, and won't till had some instruction or a winch guru giving direction.
I used to have some dangerous toys in my tool box at work and had a lot of instruction on how to use them...I put the winch in that category. TONGA GREEN G4 bits and of course DVD for the kids!

BTW, if anyone wants a 1:1 winch training day, contact me for costs Think there may well be a 'group training opportunity' in November though

Never ever let the cable slip through your hands always hold the cable and and allow your hand to move with the cable then let it go and grasp it again further back allowing your hand to move with the cable, however you must be at least 6ft from the winch.
Winch training 17th 18th November anyone In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.
