25 4" x 12' fencing rails on the roof plus 50 5" x 6" fence posts, assorted tools, sledge hammer, post maul and a petrol post-hole borer inside and the car didn't even sweat. Mind you, my expo rack has had the side rails, "spoiler" rail and front baffle removed to give a flat rack. Wouldn't want to carry anything against or on the side or end rails as they are made of chocolate.
Having lifted a few sleepers to head height when bulding a retaining wall, I wouldn't fancy your chances of getting them on the roof without a fork-lift. As previously mentioned, see if you can get your hands on a trailer for the day. I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

I suspect it's not ability of the car / rack to support the weight that drives the recommendation. LR are probably concerned about the effect of a high weight on the vehicle's c of g making it more prone to rolling over.
Walking around on it when parked is one thing, going round corners and / or traversing a side slope is entirely another.
